With Woods Core, our very own version of general studies courses, you will be encouraged to develop new perspectives so that you can think differently about issues that can change lives. Plus, with only 39 credit hours needed to complete Woods Core, you will have more time for second majors, minors, internships, or study abroad, giving you ample opportunities to grow.

Woods Core courses are offered on a rotating basis. To assist with course planning, you may refer to the Woods Core grid, the Woods Core Course Rotation schedule, or contact your academic advisors. Suppose you transfer courses or other college credit. In that case, Woods Core courses may be taken in other combinations with the provision that no more than two of the critical thinking/writing courses may be taken simultaneously.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the oldest Catholic College in Indiana, expanded its mission to include men in all programs in 2015, yet continues to embrace its rich history as a women’s College. Before women fought for equal pay, before women secured the right to vote, there was Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College before the women’s rights movement even began.

For generations, SMWC has been empowering students to make a difference in their lives and their world. It all started with a holy woman’s faith in divine providence.

SMWC has helped shape the fabric of both women’s education and early Catholic education in America. A closer look at its early days — during a period of limited opportunities for women and widespread discrimination against Catholics — shows that its founding was precipitated by a commitment to helping students “Aspire Higher.”
