Marymount School is an independent, Catholic day school that seeks to educate young women who continue to question, risk, and grow—young women who care, serve, and lead—young women prepared to challenge, shape, and change the world.

Marymount is a college preparatory school for girls, committed to the development of the lifelong skills of critical thinking and problem-solving. A wide range of extracurricular activities complements the academic program and provides opportunities for creativity, self-expression, leadership, and collaboration. These experiences foster social skills, sportsmanship, a sense of responsibility, independence, and self-confidence. The School promotes in each student a respect for her unique abilities and a commitment to responsible living in a changing world. Marymount welcomes diversity and draws upon it to foster cultural sensitivity, religious understanding, and a global perspective.

Since 1969 the School has been independently incorporated under the direction of a Board of Trustees comprised of parents, alumnae, members of the RSHM, and other educational leaders. Marymount is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools. The School holds memberships in the National Association of Independent Schools, the Educational Records Bureau, the Independent School Admissions Association of Greater New York, the National Catholic Educational Association, and the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools.

Marymount welcomes students of all backgrounds and faiths. The School’s Catholic traditions invite honest introspection and compassionate giving. Ethical decision-making and a strong sense of social justice drive Marymount’s commitment to serving the community and to fostering individual integrity and reflection.

Rooted in the Catholic tradition, Marymount encourages each student to develop and nurture her own spiritual identity while respecting those of others. The religious studies curriculum awakens students to the call for social justice and engages them in dialogue about various religious traditions, scripture, and moral/ethical questions. Students of all ages pause for reflection at weekly chapel services as well as at regular Masses, class retreats, and service programs. The program includes preparation for the sacraments of First Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Confirmation.

Service-learning and philanthropy support the School’s mission and the goals of the RSHM network of schools. Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning, and reflecting that combines academic work with meaningful service to others. Students give of their time and talent to serve the powerless, the deprived, and the marginalized. These activities support the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

Key to the Marymount mission is the second goal of the RSHM Network of schools: to create unity through diversity. Throughout the year, Marymount works to increase awareness and bring the community together through a series of social justice and diversity initiatives. Marymount instills in its students the understanding that they are global citizens who should value all human beings, seeing their differences as enriching rather than alienating differences that should be appreciated rather than ignored, categorized, or rejected. Marymount expects its students to embrace diversity by celebrating differences and addressing unconscious biases.

Marymount’s community is a diverse one, reflecting on a small scale the immense diversities of our global society. The School challenges all forms of discrimination based on major social identifiers such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, socio-economic status, physical ability, learning differences, sexual orientation, age, and religion. Through both curricular and extracurricular activities, everyone in the community learns the principles of solidarity and how to become allies of those groups who have been silenced because of discrimination, bias, and violence. Marymount students are a unified, powerful, and nurturing community not despite their differences, but because of them.

Our remarkable faculty creates a secure environment in which girls can take risks, ask challenging questions, and grow in confidence and conviction. Faculty members are models of lifelong learning and Christian values. In a quest to develop her own spiritual identity, each student explores questions of personal integrity, ethical decision-making, and social justice.
