The school was established in 1973 and teaches mainly through the medium of English. Ysgol Penglais School is an ambitious and thriving school that always expects the best from our pupils. We have high expectations of ourselves and each other, both as pupils and staff, and we continually drive to achieve our very best. Teaching and learning is the main focus of the school and we are fortunate to have experienced staff with a very high level of subject knowledge and a great understanding of pupils’ learning. This inspires pupils to learn, to develop their skills, and to achieve their best. The outcomes of our pupils at A-Levels and the pathways many choose to take exemplifies the excellent experiences they have had in the school. We are a very comprehensive school, serving Aberystwyth and many areas within and beyond Ceredigion. This produces great energy within the school which provides our pupils with a range of opportunities. Our pastoral care and inclusion within the school are excellent and helps support all of our pupils to achieve well. We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities which enables our pupils to experience success in many aspects of their lives, socially as well as academically. We aim to develop well-rounded and happy individuals who are well qualified to become successful members of the community. Ysgol Penglais School is a school that is at the very heart of the community and we aim to work closely with all ventures within the Aberystwyth community. Collaboration brings many opportunities and we seek out occasions when we can work with local community members to support our students as well as the community. Penglais has all the advantages that a larger school can offer. These benefits include a greater range of subject choices at all levels, more specialist teaching, and ancillary staff, and very good facilities. Every pupil is supported and encouraged by our well-established system of Form Tutors and Heads of House. "Pupils and students adopt very positive attitudes towards learning. their motivation is evidenced by the consistency of their good behavior and their ability to sustain appropriate levels of concentration" The School has also built up a reputation for excellent care for those pupils with Additional Learning Needs, including a Learning Support Centre for those pupils with severe and moderate learning difficulties in north Ceredigion. Great emphasis is placed on the quality of teaching and learning. Our examination results are consistently well above national averages and attract national prominence. There is also a strong musical tradition at the School and regular opportunities to take part in musicals and dramatic productions. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities at Penglais including all main team games, many clubs and societies, and a fantastic range of visits and exchanges. Fieldwork and educational visits are organized every year.
