The Ursuline Preparatory School, Wimbledon is an independent Catholic school for girls from age 3 to 11 years. Boys aged 3 and 4 are admitted to the Nursery. Deciding on the right school for your child is very important, and we believe that a personal visit is invaluable.
The Ursuline Preparatory School, Wimbledon is not an academically selective school. Our selection process is designed to identify pupils who can benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education and to make a positive contribution to the life of the school. Parents are encouraged to visit the school by making an appointment via the Headmaster’s Office.
The usual points of entry are into the Nursery at the start of the term immediately following the child’s 3rd birthday or into our Reception Class (4 - 5 years of age, in September after their 4th birthday. Pupils in Nursery may attend either a part-time morning session or full-time (whole day session). We may also have occasional places in other year groups for older pupils. Please contact the Headmaster’s Office for details. Places are offered according to the date on which a completed Registration Form is received, with priority given to Roman Catholic children and siblings. Nursery is considered to be the first class in the school and girls are expected to continue into the Reception Class the following year. Entry to the Reception Class is, therefore, automatic. There are two Nursery classes.
We reserve the right to withdraw the offer of a place at our School if information becomes available that contravenes the criteria for admissions. In such a case, an appeal may be made in writing to the Governors. If, in the opinion of the School, a child is not flourishing in the school environment because of a previously known but not disclosed (by Parents or Guardians) learning or behavioral difficulty, a new school may be suggested. If reasonably possible a term's notice will be given by the school. In the event of over-subscription in the Pre-Prep or Prep year group, preference will be given to a sibling of a child already at the School, followed by practicing Roman Catholic children. A child may be placed on a waiting list if the year group is oversubscribed. Parents will then be informed if a place becomes available.
We aim for a smooth and gentle introduction to school so that all children are happy, secure, and ready to learn. Before joining children are invited to visit and take part in classroom activities for at least one session or one day. They meet the teachers, become familiar with the classroom situation, and make some friends. A nursery nurse or classroom assistant will support new children. In the term before entry, Nursery children come in for a ‘stay and play session. Older pupils, in Reception, Pre-Prep, and Prep, are assigned a ‘buddy’ – or maybe 2 to facilitate the settling in period. 'Taster days' for entry to the Prep Department are arranged informally to assess pupil need.
The Children enjoy a rich diversity of experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom. Through our challenging curriculum, through our full sporting program, through our varied range of outings and residential trips, and our developed range of extra-curricular activities, together with our multiple opportunities to promote the ethos of ‘Service, we help prepare the children fully for the next step in their educational journey, as well as enabling them to look forward to the future with confidence, keen to make a difference in the world. We believe in a close link between home and school, born of the belief that working in partnership with parents is of advantage to all and makes this school stronger.
The Ursuline Preparatory School is a Registered Charity (No. 1079754), and a Company Limited by Guarantee. As such it is managed by a Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees meets termly and oversees the school's governing body. Mr. Tom Bolland, as Chair of the Trustee body, has been delegated the role of Proprietor of the Ursuline Preparatory School by the Ursuline Order.
The school's governing body volunteers their time and professional skills to ensure that the school operates efficiently. They are responsible for the long-term strategy and future development of the school and meet regularly to discuss school development matters and offer support to the school’s Head and Senior Management Team.
