We are a Catholic primary school where all our pupils belong to a caring, sharing community that promotes learning through respect and love for all through our shared Catholic faith. We strive to follow Christ’s example to always do our best. St Wilfrid’s School is a Voluntary Aided Catholic primary school for children aged 4 years to 11 years of age. The nursery unit is non-denominational and has separate admissions criteria. We have around 320 pupils on roll plus a nursery offering 26 part-time morning or afternoon places.
We aim to provide a happy, safe, secure, and stimulating environment where all our children are supported and encouraged to achieve their very best. St Wilfrid’s Mission Statement states – ‘we strive to follow Christ’s example to always do our best and we feel that we can do this by having a strong partnership between home, school and the parish. We pride ourselves on the good behavior and strong relationships that the children have with their peers and adults in the school.
St Wilfrid’s School is a voluntary aided Catholic primary school for children aged 4 years to 11 years of age. The nursery unit is non-denominational and has separate admissions criteria. We have around 320 pupils on roll plus a nursery offering 26 part-time morning or afternoon places. St Wilfrid's RC Primary School opened as a one-form entry school in 1959 in Shawsdale Road on the First estate. Then in 2012, we had an exciting new build that will take us to a two-form entry primary school. Currently, there are two classes in each year group up to and including year 4. We have bright, cheerful classrooms, an ICT suite, library, and 2 halls used for both PE and lunch. We have large playgrounds and some super climbing frames.
As a voluntary aided school we are part of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham and we offer a moral education, which follows the teachings of the Church and encourages the children to grow in love and respect for one another and the world about them. Through a rich and varied curriculum, opportunities are provided for the children to develop lively and enquiring minds. They are encouraged to grow in confidence and maturity and develop relevant skills for the future. We help the children to consider world problems such as famines and disasters, environmental issues, and local concerns and we support their efforts to alleviate the suffering and hardships of others.
St Wilfrid's is recognized as a National Healthy School, and we continually educate, encourage and support all of our children in living healthy lifestyles through eating, physical activity, emotional well-being, and PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education). This contributes significantly to providing all our children with the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes to make decisions about being and staying safe while enjoying and achieving in what they do. We work with Evolve, a social impact company, to help provide children with high-quality PE lessons and a range of after-school clubs.
As part of the Catholic Community, here at St Wilfrid’s, we try our very best to follow the teachings of the Gospel. Working in partnership with our families and parish, we strive to live together inside of school and outside of it too, as a loving community, interacting with others by following the example of Jesus. Each half term, using the Catholic Schools' Pupil Profile, we focus on a new Value and Virtue, learning about what they mean in our everyday lives and trying to demonstrate them.
Together, we are growing to be more Grateful and Generous, Attentive and Discerning, Compassionate and Loving, Faith-filled and Hopeful, Eloquent and Truthful, Learned and Wise, Curious, and Active, Intentional and Prophetic. St Wilfrid’s caters to children from Nursery up to Year 6. The school also has the benefit of a dedicated group of support staff, working throughout the school, to help the children progress as much as possible throughout their time here. The majority of the curriculum taught at St Wilfrid’s is laid down by the Government: in Nursery and Reception, the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Framework’ is followed, while the curriculum taught in Years 1 to 6 is referred to as the ‘National Curriculum'.
