St Thomas of Aquin’s is a school community that aims to meet the needs of all of our young people, no matter who they are, where they are from, whether they have a lively faith, are seeking answers to the questions they are asking, or profess no faith at all.
We endeavor to work with parents, carers, and other partners to provide the best possible support for our young people as they journey through school towards, what we hope and pray, will be positive and sustained destinations that will bring them joy and fulfillment in their years beyond St Thomas’.
Our patron saint, St Thomas Aquinas (1225 – 1274), has left the world a wonderful legacy in his many philosophical and theological writings, the greatest of these being the Summa Theologica and the Summa Contra Gentiles. In these works, St Thomas brings together faith and reason in a wonderful synthesis which, even today, is still studied by scholars in universities across the world. It is for this reason that St Thomas is the patron saint of schools and universities.
St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School is a denominational secondary school that serves the area of southeast Edinburgh. It draws most of its pupils from Holy Cross, St Mark’s, St Mary’s, and St Peter’s RC primary schools. The wide catchment area stretches from the Pentlands to Granton. This varied social mix gives St Thomas’ a strongly comprehensive character.
As a Catholic school, our vision is to give our young people a solid foundation for their lives which is informed by the same synthesis of faith and reason. Our school is centered on the formation of the whole person, body-mind, and spirit.
We provide a wide variety of opportunities for our young people to understand the value and dignity of the human body, through physical education, education in health and wellbeing, and opportunities for wider achievement that involve a wide variety of activities such as sport and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
We are committed to the intellectual formation of our young people by providing them with high-quality teaching and learning which develops their capacity to think logically and search for the truth and meaning which is at the heart of all education.
We provide our young people with opportunities to develop spiritually, to reach out to our brothers and sisters who are less fortunate than we are, and to discover the reasonableness of faith through the RE programs they study from S1 – S6. Ultimately, our school is centered on Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

The school is committed to the education of the whole child, body, mind, and spirit, to ensure that all our pupils fulfill their God-given talents. The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Head Teacher, 2 Depute Head Teachers, and a Business Manager. In session 2016-17 there will be 10 Curricular Leaders, 3 pupil Support Leaders, and 1 Support for Learning Leader. The Parent Council provides helpful and constructive support to all aspects of school life.
