At St Osmund's School, we believe every child is a child of God and has a great future ahead of them. We are a family of faith who live by faith preparing children to become independent and prepared for whatever life has in store for them. We are a small, happy school that promotes a love of knowledge and a culture of learning.
Through our challenging teaching environment, every child aspires to develop their talents and gifts as they discover, learn, and explore God's world. We nurture Catholic values in our children which mirror the values of their home life especially self-respect, respecting others, working with others, justice for all, fortitude, care for the earth, and compassion for the poor. Our faith is at the center of everything we do at St Osmund’s and great care is taken to ensure that the RE program is creative and cross-curricular.
The children follow the ‘Come & See’ scheme of work supplemented by our excellent resources for Christian and multi-faith study. RE also offers many opportunities for helping children reflect, discuss and learn about personal, social, and emotional issues. These skills are crucial to daily life if our world is to be a place where folk is respected and valued and where we can develop our unique way of coping with the stresses of modern living. The school takes every opportunity to build a powerful relationship between church, home, and school. The staff provides the children with plenty of opportunity for reflection and worship which is demonstrated in thoughtful and powerful work produced by the children throughout the liturgical year.
The Foundation stage at St Osmund’s offers a broad, balanced curriculum where all seven areas of learning are covered equally through play, talk, and exploration. These are appropriate to the age, stage, and development of the child.
In Key Stage 1, we strive to ensure a smooth and happy transition from Reception and build on the good routines and attitudes that have been established. We expect the children to continue to assume more independence in their learning and to take responsibility for their personal belongings. We may ask the children to take verbal messages between home and school.
The structure of the school day becomes slightly more formal, with Literacy and Numeracy sessions every day. Other subjects, including RE, Science, Computing & Computer Literacy, History, Geography, Art and Design, PE, Design Technology and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education are introduced either as separate subjects or grouped as topics.
By the time your child enters Key Stage 2, they will already be familiar with school routines. All children in Key Stage 2 are placed into House teams. Some Year 6 pupils are voted as House Captains to lead the houses. Children are encouraged to earn house points for their house and participate in various activities (fundraising, sports events, fun activities, etc.).
Curriculum evenings are held at the beginning of the academic year. These evenings allow you to meet the class teacher who will inform you of year group routines and expectations. Parental help is always very much appreciated. Teachers always need help to support reading, carry out administrative jobs and supervise trips. We prefer you not to support your child's class and encourage you to support another year group.
Through sport, children can experience a sense of achievement and understand that this is a result of commitment, determination, and effort. We aim for each child to transfer this understanding to their academic achievements too. Our focus at St Osmund’s is on encouraging every child to participate and enjoy the benefits of sport and exercise, to help them lead healthy, active lifestyles not only today but in later life. We give opportunities to compete in all sports, to be competitive, and take part in physically demanding activities.
One of our teachers co-ordinates the enthusiastic and proactive children who make up the School Pupil Council. Each year from Year 2 to Year 6 has one boy and one girl council representative. The children are selected from their group of peers.
The Governing Body works in close co-operation with the Headteacher in taking general responsibility for the conduct of the school to promote high standards. Governors have an important role in maintaining the distinctive Christian ethos of the school through developing and maintaining links with St Osmund's Church and Southwark Diocese.
