St John’s is a Christian school that empowers everyone to fulfill their unique, God-given potential in a safe, caring, and creative learning environment. Through inclusive and inspirational teaching, we aim for every child to make rapid progress and succeed as a lifelong learner in an ever-changing world.
We are very proud of our Christian foundation at St. John’s and seek to reflect this in everything we do. Our school is a community where all feel valued and included and we recognize that children learn most when they are happy, feel safe and confident as learners. Therefore, developing important life skills such as problem-solving, resilience, perseverance and independence is the bedrock of supporting all pupils to achieve their potential.
It is upon this solid foundation that we develop the core skills of literacy, numeracy, and scientific understanding, applied within a wider, balanced curriculum offer. We recognize that learning happens through a range of activities and in differing contexts, and we encourage creative approaches to teach and learning that consider both pupil's academic starting points and their wider development needs.
At St. John’s we share Core Christian Values that underpin everything we do. Each half term, we focus on one of these values and discover together how we can put it into practice. To help us we draw upon ideas from Christian Values 4 Schools to ensure a distinctively Christian approach.
Each week, class teachers can nominate a pupil in their class who has been observed demonstrating the Christian value of the half-term within their behavior, relationships with others, or personal conduct. These pupils receive recognition in the form of a special certificate.
We also try to link our Christian values, where we can, directly to Spiritual Moral Social, and Cultural education, British Values, and PHSE. See our map about how we seek to achieve this. St John’s CE Primary School continues to work very closely with the Church and is rapidly developing joint strategies to support the children and families we serve. We hope this will lead to further buildings and development works on both the school and Church sites, to cater for our ambitious and exciting plans.
At St John’s we follow the National Curriculum throughout the school in EYFS, KS1, and KS2. Developing children’s literacy, numeracy and scientific skills is central to our planning and teaching. We then apply these skills across the curriculum finding cross-curricular links where possible.
We aim for children to learn in meaningful contexts, independently and collaboratively. We encourage creativity and support the children in expressing themselves, in all areas of the curriculum, to develop their confidence and foster cooperation. Our curriculum is designed in terms of experiences and activities that will promote the continued growth of each child through the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, and key skills.
