St John’s is a multi-faith community in which we all work together to serve the community of Sparkhill to “bring life in all its fullness” We are a two-form entry Church of England Primary School in Birmingham and we are here to give the best education possible to the children of Sparkhill. We believe that every child is special and unique: made in the image of God. We aim to give our children the very best start to their education, developing academically and spiritually. We hope that throughout their time with us, children learn to grow into citizens who uphold and respect shared values, understanding that others may hold opinions and beliefs different from their own.
We are proud of our diversity and welcome children from a range of backgrounds and faiths, as well as those who have no faith. We believe that there is strength in diversity: in understanding another person’s point of view and appreciating difference whilst searching for what we share. We welcome each individual into our school family in which we care for one another. We have strong links with St John’s Church which is situated slightly further up Stratford Road.
We believe that every child is made in the image of God, and as such, is special. All children are different and we want them to appreciate their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others. We don’t want our children to try to be the same we want them to be happy to be themselves. We encourage self-esteem and confidence in a caring, family environment.
We believe that it is our job to help all children find their gifts and the confidence to be able to shine. We want each child to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually and we believe we can achieve this through creating a learning environment that is happy, calm, and safe. As a Church school, we enable children to grow in, and reflect on, their faith -no matter what that may be-and to respect the beliefs and opinions of others.
We want to support every child to become the best version of themselves, and to grow into confident life-long learners who understand that people are the same, but different. We teach them to “reach for the stars”. We want them to leave our school with strong values that will enable them to make their communities better places in which to live and work. We work with community groups, governors, and most importantly, parents to give our children the best start to their education journey.
We equip our children with respect, forgiveness, empathy, and an understanding of right and wrong. In the words of Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Our children are the world’s future and we believe they will make it a good one.
At St John’s we use the ‘Oxford Reading Tree’, a reading scheme to support teaching reading. Reading is taught in all of our classes from the very beginning of learning how to read, to the higher-level skills of inference and deduction. We supplement our reading with a whole variety of books, some chosen by the teacher to support a child, and some as a free choice for children.
