St John the Divine is a Church of England primary school which links with the surrounding communities in both Lambeth and Southwark. You will find our school in Camberwell, not far from the Oval. Our old Victorian building looks deceptively small from the Camberwell New Road entrance but hides a wealth of spaces that have been developed and adapted to enable us to provide a wide range of learning opportunities.

Here at St John the Divine, we are a Christian learning community dedicated to providing the best educational experiences for our pupils. We aim to ensure that all of our children can achieve their full potential that they become successful learners, confident individuals and that they leave us ready for the next stage in their learning journey.

The Governors and staff of St John the Divine Primary School fully recognize the responsibilities and duty placed upon them to have arrangements to promote the welfare of all pupils and ensure they are safeguarded from harm.

We aim to create in our school:

  • A secure, caring, and welcoming environment, which meets the needs of all learners and includes them in every aspect of school life.
  • A stimulating and challenging environment fostering self-discipline and encouraging positive attitudes and behaviors.
  • A commitment by Governors, staff, parents, pupils, and visitors to do what is in the best interest of the school community.
  • The opportunity for all pupils through the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum, to develop their potential following their abilities, interests, and aspirations.

We believe that the partnership between home and school is central to meeting these aims. As parents and carers, we encourage you to take an active role in your child’s education throughout their time here at St John's. At St John the Divine we aim to provide children with a broad and balanced curriculum which develops curiosity and fosters a life-long love of learning. We follow the National Curriculum, finding as many opportunities to enrich children’s learning. We aim, where possible to base learning around a topic or a theme, as we believe that this enables children to make logical connections and deepen their understanding.

Here at St John the Divine Primary School we believe that children learn best in an environment where they feel secure and valued, where there is a partnership between school and home, and where children can learn by doing rather than being told. We believe that children need to experience a wide variety of first-hand, practical learning opportunities to enable them to achieve their full potential. We endeavor to build on each child’s previous experiences, ensuring equal access to the curriculum, through offering children opportunities to experiment through well-planned, appropriate activities and quality play, both indoors and outdoors.

St John the Divine Church of England Primary School serves a diverse, open, and accepting community. Here at St John's, everyone is committed to the values espoused within the Gospels. As modern British values have evolved from a time when we were historically Christian, our Gospel values and British values are fundamentally the same.

Through the teaching of our curriculum, we believe in and promote core British values including democracy, respect, tolerance, acceptance, peace, being non-judgmental, humility, justice, the rule of the law, the dignity of each human being, and individual liberty, forgiveness, generosity, fairness, discipline, and hope. St John's promotes 'Prevent' to all stakeholders. Prevent forms part of our culture of safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all of our children.
