We are a warm and friendly school with a strong sense of community, family, and excellent links to our parish. We believe that by working together, (parents/carers, teachers, and governors), we can help our children become life-long learners and confident individuals. We want them all to be able to make positive contributions to the world in which we live. Our past pupils and current parents are a testimony to this.
Good communication is essential in providing the best learning experience for your child and our website will go towards helping to achieve this aim. We have regular opportunities for you, as parents and carers, to meet with staff at the school (both informally and formally) to discuss your child’s progress and ways in which we can help them to move forward.
Our teachers are enthusiastic and strive to encourage a love of learning in our pupils. We have a broad curriculum where a wide range of teaching styles are used to ensure that every child’s needs are catered for.
St Edmund’s is a family school and we know that starting school is not only a milestone in a child's development but is a big step for each family, and therefore, we welcome you and your child. We aim to provide a secure, stimulating environment in which young children lay foundations for learning and life, through their development of skills, which are underpinned by our Faith.
Staff in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), work closely with our Nursery and Reception parents to establish strong links between family, school, and the wider parish community. Religious Education (RE) is at the center of all our teaching, through the ‘Come and See’ program and reflects the attitudes outlined in our Mission Statement. There are also regular opportunities throughout the year, for the morning and afternoon Nursery children to attend mass with the whole school.
St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School first opened its doors in 1939. In the early days, the school was administered by the Sisters of Mercy and many ex-pupils will remember the sisters and staff who helped form their early and lasting memories of school life.
Online safety is taught as part of our Computing curriculum as well as being covered in standalone PSHE lessons. We strive to develop the children’s understanding of the potential dangers as well as the positive aspect of using devices with online functions. The children are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly as well as learning how to seek help or report concerns that they may have when using the internet. Every child at St Edmund's has signed an age-appropriate Internet Acceptable Use Agreement and is expected to follow the guidelines whenever they are online.
We aim to offer frequent Online Safety workshops for parents to guide the various ways they can help their children stay safe online. The following links/documents provide excellent information and tips to help you explore Online Safety at home with your children.
It is a primary aim and mission of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring, Christian community, whose values are built on mutual trust and respect for all. The school behavior policy is therefore designed to support how all members of the school can live and work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe, and secure.
At the age of eleven, the children transfer to several different secondary schools. Each September, we hold an information evening on Secondary Transfer to support parents with the process. We encourage parents of Year 5 children to visit the secondary school in which they may be interested without their children in the first instance and to take their children to see a ‘short list’ of preferred secondary schools, for evening viewings, when their child is in Year 6.
St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School is a Voluntary Aided school and its Governing Body consists of both appointed and elected governors. Foundation governors at the school represent the interests of the Diocese of Westminster who are trustees of the school. Foundation Governors are appointed in the name of the Archbishop and form the majority of the governing body. They have a legal duty to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school and to ensure that the school is conducted under its trust deed. The Headteacher is automatically eligible to be a full member of the governing body by the office. Headteachers have the choice of being a governor. Both teaching and support staff who are paid to work at the school are eligible to stand as staff governors. Parents of pupils registered at the school are eligible to stand for election as a parent governor.
