Inspired by our Christian ethos we aim to provide a caring, healthy and friendly environment for all of our families. We work in close partnership with parents/carers so that they can play an active part in their child's education.
Throughout their time with us, we encourage children to be positive, responsible, and considerate young people who can work cooperatively with others whilst also being confident and successful as independent learners.
At St. Andrew are the children, their parents/carers, and staff come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. In our multi-cultural society, we hope to have a greater awareness, respect, and tolerance of each other by learning about each other’s customs and beliefs. As a Christian and community school, we are in a position to offer a firm foundation for a more just multicultural society.
We regard all children as being of equal value and we aim to show by our curriculum, attitudes, and values that cultural diversity is welcome in our school. We intend that all children, regardless of language, faith or culture, should feel valued as individuals.
Children’s names are placed on a waiting list and places are allocated as follows. Preference is given to children, who have special educational needs, and for whom St. Andrew’s is thought to be the most appropriate placement and for brothers and sisters of children already attending the school. Please note that a place in a Nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception Class.
There is one intake a year into the Reception Class, in September. If you are interested in a school place, please phone to make an appointment to visit. Information packs regarding admission to primary schools are sent to parents by the Local Authority in the school year before admission.
It has been government policy to establish home/school agreements, which contribute to an effective partnership between home and school. Our home/school agreement sets out the rights and responsibilities of the school, the parents, and the children. Parents are asked to sign a home/school agreement when their child starts school.
All Key Stage 2 children will be allowed to learn to play the recorder. The school choir also practices each week. Some children may also learn to play strings or brass. Parents may be asked to pay for music books, which then become their property. After-school short courses in basketball, football, tag rugby, hockey, dance, etc. are offered subject to the availability of specialist staff.
Our Behaviour Policy deals with bullying, aggressive and disruptive behavior. It states what we expect from the children and what is not acceptable. We hope that our school’s ethos helps the children to develop qualities of tolerance, self-respect, courtesy, and consideration for others and their property. If children display anti-social behavior, parents will be informed and the problems discussed with them. The cooperation and support of parents enable us to maintain a good standard of behavior.
St Andrew’s C.E.Primary School follows the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (click here) in the Nursery and Reception classes and the National Curriculum (click here) in Years 1 to 6. To make learning fun and relevant, we use a thematic approach to teaching which is inspired by the interests of the children and teachers themselves.
This means that teachers use themes such as "Up, up and away" in Year 1 or "The Great Wall of China" in Year 6 to teach both knowledge and skills across many curriculum areas such as History, Geography, Science, Art, and Design and Computing. English and Mathematics are taught daily, sometimes in discrete lessons, sometimes using the topic theme as a stimulus for work in these subjects too. There are, of course, times when some subject content does not fit in with a class theme these areas are taught discretely to ensure full coverage of the curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to continuously evolve so that we offer the children an increasingly rich and broad learning experience.
As a Christian Voluntary Aided Church of England School, our Religious Education curriculum follows the local Manchester Diocesan Curriculum. This is one way in which we develop the children's spiritual and ethical understanding and knowledge.
Children at St Andrew’s receive high-quality phonics teaching. We use a variety of different schemes including Jolly Phonics and Phonics Play, amongst others. The teaching of reading is supported by providing children with a comprehensive and varied reading experience which includes Oxford Reading Tree, Bug Club, and a range of other literature. Once children are past the early stages of reading we use Accelerated Reader to motivate and monitor all our readers.
We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. A key element to enhancing the curriculum at St Andrew’s is our involvement with the wider community. We get involved every week with learning beyond our school, our city, and our country. We have regular visitors and enjoy school trips to different places. We get involved with supporting those needier than ourselves and try hard to develop those important 'life skills' needed for adult life.
Our curriculum offers much more than the statutory requirements. We also invest time in developing the children's manners, confidence, and support and respect for one another. We have a House system which we use to emphasize these issues. Extra-curricular clubs are held on most evenings after school.
