Rodney House School provides school places for children with an EHC plan stating 'Specialist support' and a city-wide Outreach service that supports Early Years children and their families. The service also offers training and support to daycare providers.
Rodney House is a welcoming community that helps all children to reach their full potential. We are a unique school. We offer support to approximately 300 children at any one time. 60 through school places and the rest through outreach service. We aim to provide a safe, caring environment where all achievement is valued and celebrated.
Rodney House aims to create and maintain a safe learning environment where all children and adults feel safe, secure, and valued and know they will be listened to and taken seriously. Our school is committed to the principles outlined in 'Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015' and implements policies, practices, and procedures which promote safeguarding and the emotional and physical well-being of children, young people, and staff.
At Rodney House, the majority of pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum' Development Matters. We tailor activities to meet the development needs of the child. he Prime Areas of development underpin children's learning. They are delivered continuously throughout the school day. Repetition of activities throughout the year ensures children have the opportunity to consolidate and develop their skills. At all levels, children are encouraged to be independent learners.
Learning outside the classroom allows children to develop and apply independence and life skills. We regularly take trips into the local community such as visiting the supermarket with a shopping list or practicing walking independently on a visit to the park.
Parents and carers are always welcome to join our educational visits. To provide first-hand experiences, classes will often conduct an educational visit linked to provide a real experience of the topic being explored in the classroom. This practical experience supports children's understanding of their topic. For example, a visit to a garden center may take place to support learning about growing and spring.
Some children and young people unwittingly manage to rack up hundreds of pounds of charges with sneaky ‘in-app purchases. The game itself may be free to download from your app store but some games use in-app purchases like buying extra lives, add-ons, or simply to keep playing to generate income. Children, especially those with SEN can easily mistake the purchase warnings for play money.
Rodney House provides a valuable outreach service to families and settings of children aged 0-5 across the city.
We deliver termly Early Years SENCO Networks covering a range of topics and updates to support EY SEND practice. Our service is part of a city-wide initiative involving the Primary and High Specialist Support Schools and other Specialist provisions. The service is highly valued throughout the Local Authority as shown by the high demand for the service and the very positive evaluations of work already carried out.
Each half term a topic booklet will be sent home containing ideas of how to support your child's learning at home. Visual timetables are used in all classes at Rodney House. They are an effective strategy for supporting children to know what is happening next and during the day. If you need symbols or photographs laminating or making to use a home please let your child's class team know. If you need PECS symbols making we can help with that too!
On October 31st, 2016 Rodney House School Longsight opened to pupils for the first time. Pupils, parents, and staff were prepared for the move by sharing a transition book and visiting while the final refurbishment of the building took place. We are settling in, finding our way, and getting to know the local area. So far we have walked to ASDA and the library.
