Pencoed Primary School is a co-educational, county-maintained community school for children between 3 and 11 years of age. We are an English-medium school, but some Welsh is also used as a language of communication with the pupils to improve their capacity to use everyday Welsh. The school is set on spacious grounds and has many exciting facilities. It was established in September 2008 when Pencoed Junior School & Infant School amalgamated. We have an additional site at Heol-y-Cyw for pupils up to Year 4. Admission to our school is for children who reside/move into our area. Our roll currently stands at 573.
Pencoed Primary School believes that every child must be valued for their talents, cultural heritage, and the contribution they make to our community. They will be encouraged to develop their full potential in a structured and caring learning environment. All schools follow the National Curriculum. This ensures that all pupils study much the same work whatever school they attend. Although the National Curriculum outlines WHAT must be taught it allows each school to decide HOW it will teach its pupils. In Pencoed Primary School we have an exciting, dynamic curriculum that is firmly based on our Vision Statement. We aim to cover literacy & numeracy in the mornings and topics or themes in the afternoons. In this way, we aim to ensure “basic skills” are firmly rooted in our curriculum.
The Foundation Phase places a great emphasis on active learning for children between the ages of 3 & 7. We spend a great deal of our time on “the basics” and even when studying aspects of History, Geography, or Science we try to ensure that pupils’ skills in literacy, numeracy, and digital competency are applied and extended. We also ensure that all the foundation subjects in the National Curriculum are carefully planned. That is, Art, History, Geography, and Music are given prominence to develop creativity and self-expression amongst our pupils. The Literacy and Numeracy Framework and Digital Competency Framework underpin all that we do so that pupils are given extensive opportunities to apply these skills across all areas of the curriculum. This ensures that our pupils receive a varied and interesting curriculum diet.
Currently, we have nineteen mixed ability classes and three classes for children with special educational needs. Documents produced by and for the Governing Body are available for viewing in the school office provided that the Headteacher or Chairman of Governors have received reasonable notification of such a request.
