At Parsloes Primary School we aim to deliver a curriculum that is broad, balanced, and based on developing all pupils’ knowledge, skills, and understanding across a range of subjects. We are determined that all children succeed and reach high standards and believe in a rich curriculum that is engaging for all. Reading, Writing, and Maths are at the heart of our curriculum and take up the larger part of teaching time. RE and PSHE are taught using the Local Authority schemes of work. Modern Languages are taught in KS2. All other subjects History, Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology, Science, and PE are taught through an integrated topic approach using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
We are extremely proud of the polite, thoughtful, and enthusiastic children that come to Parsloes Primary School and we always aim to provide very clear expectations of good behavior and respect for all which help to underpin effective learning. We believe that the environment and education that Parsloes Primary School provides for its pupils will help to ensure that they achieve their best at school and beyond.
The children learn many skills while in Nursery. We aim to develop early literacy and mathematical skills as well as developing children’s self–confidence and self-awareness whilst encouraging them to build good relationships with their peers and other adults in the setting. The key aspects of effective learning include being willing to have a go, being involved and concentrating, having their ideas, and enjoying their achievements.
Reception is an important year for developing basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills which the children will build on throughout the school. We use a variety of teacher-led and child-initiated activities. Children have the opportunity to develop their love of learning through exploration and creative learning. We use the indoor and outdoor environments to stimulate this thirst for learning. In Reception, we follow the Early Years Framework. We base all of our classroom activities around the children’s individual needs linking to the 7 areas of learning.
The Year 1 curriculum will build upon and extend the EYFS curriculum. The children are in a more formal learning environment but they will continue to learn through exploration, experience, challenge, and investigation. Our topics this year will include I’m Alive learning about animals and habitats, The Magic Toymaker learning about how things work, The Circus is Coming to Town learning about different materials, and what it is like to be a circus artist.
Year 2 is an extremely important year for all pupils. We continue to build upon the basic key skills taught in Year 1 and focus on deepening children’s understanding of the key concepts in Reading, Writing, and Maths.
In Year 4 we will study a wide and varied curriculum following our cross-curricular linked units. The IPC units in year 4 include Chocolate, Fashion, Active Planet, Temples, Tombs, and Treasures, Do you Live around Here? and Bright Sparks. Each topic involves many opportunities for the children to engage in practical activities to enhance their learning experiences.
During year 5 we undertake several exciting IPC units which cover a broad range of topics such as the solar system, renewable energy, living and growing as well as the art and history of different cultures around the world. We will also be exploring where our feelings and emotions come from and how they may affect us. To support learning, we organize events and educational visits for the pupils, such as visiting a Tudor House and partaking in a video conference with The National Space Centre.
This year is an important one for the children in Year 6. Not only is it the transitional year from Primary to Secondary school, which will include SATs tests (Statutory Assessment Tests) but, it is also their last year here with us at Parsloes Primary School. During Year 6, we have a strong focus on the core learning areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Alongside this, the children will create many more memorable moments of their time spent in this school.
The Governing Board meets 6 times a year and is made up of 13 people who all wish to ensure the school provides the best possible education for all of its pupils. Training is undergone to help them carry out this role.
Standards & achievements Committee (C&S) is responsible for monitoring the curriculum.
