Our Lady’s High School is a place for learning. We achieve this by maintaining high expectations of the individual, appreciating that we are all members of a diverse community, living our Catholic faith, and embracing the values of our Servite founders. We are each unique individuals, created in the image of God, and relationships are formed through mutual respect between all members of our community. We aim to be proactive in promoting good behavior, reminding students of our expectations, and celebrating all the successes in school. Students should be very clear as to the consequences of choosing to behave inappropriately and these consequences will be applied fairly and consistently. Our guiding expectations are that students are to be peaceful, polite, and punctual at all times.
The school was founded by the Servite Sisters, our ethos, therefore, is derived from and based on Servite Values. Those values include openness and respect for diversity therefore, whilst many of our teaching staff are not Catholic or Christian, all staff appreciates the strength of the faith community to which they belong. Acts of Worship are central to the life of the school and all members of the school community are included in the holistic vision of evangelization as ‘shaping tomorrow, inspired by faith’. Our Marian commitment to service provides a working climate that enables teachers to thrive in their work our girls are engaged learners, teachers can enjoy practicing their craft and students have a desire to achieve and have personal ambition.
The government has allocated our school a sum of money which is called the "Pupil Premium". This is to improve the educational chances of students who may find circumstances outside school challenging due to financial hardship or other issues. The three identified groups are students who are entitled to free school meals (or have been anytime in the last 6 years, know as ‘Ever 6’), students who have a parent working for the Armed Services, and those children in Local Authority Care. Pupil Premium students are a diverse range of ages, backgrounds, abilities, and needs but disadvantage does not hinder potential.
To reward excellent behavior, attitude, and work, students will be rewarded using achievement points recorded electronically on the school system. Achievement points will be rewarded for excellent work and attitude in lessons, and can also be awarded for excellent attitude and contributions to the school community outside of lessons. Students work towards particular awards which are received when they achieve a fixed number of achievement points. By receiving these rewards students will also be contributing towards their form class total. These awards start with text messages home from Form Tutors and Heads of Year before moving onto letters from one of the Assistant Head Teachers, the Deputy Head Teacher, and finally the Head Teacher. For those receiving the most achievement points, there will be special lunches with the Head Teacher and then one of the school Governors.
It is important for parents/carers and other individuals to let us know when we have got it right so we can celebrate our successes. If you would like to highlight a success please do let us know by emailing or contacting a member of staff or contacting our communications office. The existence of a complaints procedure should not be seen as a way of undermining efforts to resolve a concern informally. The formal complaints procedure will need to be used were initial attempts to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful and the person raising the issue remains dissatisfied and wishes to take the matter further.
Safeguarding is the umbrella term for ensuring all our students feel safe and can achieve their potential. Safeguarding and Child Protection come under the same remit but given the very sensitive nature of Child Protection matters, a separate Child Protection Policy is in place at school. Safeguarding crosses all borders within the school environment from DBS (formerly CRB) of staff to site security and safety around the building.
We are a supportive community that follows the Gospel message of ‘Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13: 34-35). Our community is based on a deep respect for the uniqueness and diversity found within each person, on quality relationships, and a deep sense of belonging. We spread the good news of the Gospel, that God loves us no matter what, through our actions as well as our words. As Pope Francis explains “all Christians … are called to show concern for the building of a better world.” We nurture all aspects of personal development, not just academic success. Our holistic approach to education in our school enables all of us to develop to our full potential – physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. We recognize that such development becomes a lifelong journey responding to Christ’s call to live life to the full.
