We are committed to providing a caring, happy, welcoming environment that meets the needs of each child and ensures that all children have equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum including interaction with, and appreciation of, the arts and many opportunities for wider enrichment. We teach key skills and knowledge that lead to understanding and develop the confidence to succeed. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil leaves our school with high aspirations, an enduring enthusiasm for learning, and the confidence to address the world on their terms.
Children can start Orchard Nursery in the school term following their third birthday. Coming to our nursery setting will allow your child to develop their social skills and begin to make new friends in a safe, educational, play-based setting that is run by qualified professionals. This is an important stage as it supports your child to develop and gain the skills needed for future learning including basic counting/number recognition, enjoyment of stories, phonics, social skills, and physical developmental play. Orchard Nursery is both part-time and full-time. We have 20 full-time and 12 part-time places available. If all the full-time places are not taken up, additional part-time places will be offered. If there are still vacancies remaining, parents with part-time places can ask to top up the part-time entitlement to a full-time place for which there will be a charge.
All children can start Primary School in the September before their 5th Birthday if this falls between 1st September and 31st August. Parents can apply for up to six primary schools in Hackney including neighboring boroughs. If you want your child considered for our school, you will need to apply using the online application form. This is available from 1st September for admission to the following academic year. The form will be processed by Hackney Learning Trust. Early registration does not give priority as the closing date is the 15 January of the year of admission.
We develop in children a desire for life-long learning and an understanding of different cultures, traditions, and societies as well as to respect individual rights and responsibilities. Our learning community is facilitated by a leadership structure that communicates our core purpose and direction, and a system of informed continuous professional development. Our professional staff team actively seeks to take up opportunities to further their knowledge and skills to the benefit of our schools. The Governing body of The Viridis Federation of Orchard, Southwold, and Hoxton Garden Schools consists of 13 members who support the school in its strategic direction through acting as ‘critical friends.’The Governing body meets three times a year and also splits into school sub committee’s termly. These committees feedback to the main Governing body on outcomes at all three school sites. Governors also have a link Governor role overseeing areas such as safeguarding, Health & Safety, and different curriculum areas. We have been celebrated under a new program set up by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to recognize exceptional schools in the capital. Schools for Success is part of the Mayor’s drive to help tackle education inequality and increase standards for all schoolchildren across the capital, whatever their background. Schools for Success celebrates schools that are achieving academic success with all their pupils, in particular disadvantaged or vulnerable students who started behind their peers or those affected by circumstances that could have an impact on their learning.
Orchard, Southwold & Hoxton Garden are mainstream primary schools catering for children aged 3 to 11years old. All three schools are working in partnership with a shared Governing body as Viridis Schools. Though each school has its own identity and school community, staff at our schools share experience and expertise to further benefit our pupils. We believe that every child can make progress and achieve and that it is our job to make sure that this happens. We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of our pupils. At our schools, we ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups and this includes ensuring that the needs of pupils with special educational needs are met.
At Orchard Primary School we offer a curriculum that is broad and balanced to ensure every child reaches their full potential and has access to a range of educational experiences whatever their starting points or circumstance. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. Although literacy and mathematics are planned discreetly in weekly plans, many topic areas are relevant in these lessons, particularly through the choice of texts and writing outcomes in literacy. The whole school approaches to reading support quality teaching and learning.
Orchard Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its pupils. We recognize that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse and that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self-worth, view the world positively, or achieve academically. We recognize that some children who have experienced abuse may harm others. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach so that we can support all of our pupils.
