FHSU is the leading forward-thinking, entrepreneurial university of the Midwest. We have an enrollment of more than 15,000 students and offer certificate and degree programs at the associate, bachelor's, and master's levels through 31 academic departments (we also offer a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree). Fort Hays State's cozy, tree-filled campus is located in Hays, Kansas (on I-70, halfway between Kansas City and Denver). FHSU is a welcoming community in the heart of historic Hays, a community that celebrates its frontier roots and its modern sensibility - coffee shops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, shopping, and a vibrant arts scene.
The Division of Administration and Finance provides financial and service support to the University. Financial support includes budgeting, accounting, purchasing, payables, receivables, and debt management. Support services include infrastructure functions such are building maintenance, custodial services, grounds maintenance, telecommunication, and computing services, and facilities planning.
A major indicates a concentrated area of study. Throughout your college career, you will take more classes from that area than any other that is how you will gain expertise in that field. A minor is also a concentrated study in one area but requires fewer classes. Combining a major and a minor is not only a great way to earn a degree in a field you love, but doing so also allows you to study another subject about which you are passionate. Note that there are some academic programs not listed below. Many departments offer certificate programs that allow you further to focus your study in a specific academic field. Pre-professional programs are paths of concentrated study that prepare you to gain entry and succeed in professional schools (medical school, law school, etc.).
Fort Hays State offers over 70 majors to pick from to get you prepared for your future career. We provide hands-on learning with faculty members that take pride in making personal relationships with you, the student. FHSU students enjoy getting involved in our campus life with over 200 intramural activities, more than 100 student groups and organizations, and watching the Fighting Tiger Athletic Teams.
At Fort Hays State University, faculty and students are more than teachers and learners-they are also scholars. Passionately curious, our faculty and student community regularly pursue scholarly research and creative work. This scholarly activity not only distinguishes our faculty and communities regionally, nationally, and internationally, but these pursuits also shine a light on the institutional nature of Fort Hays State University as an incubator of academic and artistic discovery.
Because of its size, FHSU resides in an exciting research niche: We are big enough to offer our faculty and students the resources needed to conduct research and creative scholarship at the highest level, but we are also small enough to provide ample opportunity to anyone interested in conducting research-lower division undergraduate students do not have to "wait their turn." Faculty are encouraged to think creatively and expand the very definition of research. Our institutional personality embraces innovation, and that spirit is continuously seen in exciting academic and creative scholarship.

The first students at the school known as Fort Hays State University could not have envisioned how a prairie dog town would be transferred into a sprawling campus 100 years later. The first building ever inhabited by the school was not even located on the present-day campus. The infirmary at Fort Hays, a former army post abandoned in 1889, was where 57 students paid a tuition fee of $5 for the first summer courses in 1902. The stone guardhouse down the path at what is now Historic Fort Hays served as the gymnasium.
The school's first leader, William S. Picken, actually favored keeping the college on the site of Fort Hays. Nevertheless, a group of townspeople, spurred by real estate interests, wanted to move the college closer to Hays' city. Thus, the movement began in 1904, but not before a prairie dog town had to be removed from the land where the college's first building on that site, Picken Hall, was under construction. The construction (and subsequent renovation) of numerous buildings, both academic and residential, followed over the next 100 years, and today FHSU remains the heart of Hays.
FHSU has grown into a comprehensive regional university with over 15,000 on-campus, Virtual College (online), graduate, and international students. Moreover, while tuition costs have risen from that meager $5 amount over a century ago, FHSU still has the lowest tuition rates in the Kansas Board of Regents system and provides one of the nation's best educational values.
