Knighton House, in Durweston, Dorset is a prep school for girls ages 7-13 years with a pre-prep department for girls and boys aged between 3 – 7 years.
Knighton is a relatively small school — with numbers moving between 100 and 130. This has always been part of its strength and its appeal. The individual attention that every child receives here creates a superb start to school life, nurturing confidence and unleashing the imagination — the two things that young people will need most in a rapidly changing world.
Knighton is blessed with a beautiful site of some 35 acres on rising chalk download, overlooking the River Stour in Dorset’s Area of Natural Beauty this too is part of what makes the school special. It’s an outdoor school encouraging familiarity with and understanding of nature that stays with pupils all their lives.
The plan will consider all the needs of the school and be phased over one, three, and five years. The project will be part-funded from Knighton’s reserves but there will also be a fundraising effort among alumni and former parents.
Knighton House is a wonderful school in an idyllic place: we now need the fabric of the school to live up to its surroundings. We want to create a holistic scheme for well designed, modernized campus that reflects the ethos of the school and so contributes to the children’s inspiring experience here.
100 years since women won the right to the vote, there are still pay gaps and prejudices, glass ceilings, and limited expectations. All the research suggests that early experience is key. Too many girls learn too early that there are things they should not try to do or say.
The antidote is confidence. At Knighton House, girls lead. In the classroom, in the science lab, on the astroturf, on stage, in the choir, on the school council, and in the debating chamber. At Knighton, girls learn that there is no limit to their potential achievements except their ambitions.
Girls graduate from Knighton with deep reserves of confidence — which they will draw on in their senior schools, universities, and in the working world. Wherever in the world, they go and however far their ambitions take them, Knighton Girls know they can try anything and succeed in whatever they put their minds to.
At Knighton, a girl occupies every role: not only taking the leads in a play but also being Directors, Producers, lighting, and sound designers. At Knighton, girls lead — whether it is the student council or the hockey team. Pupils are surrounded by positive role models, on the staff, in the parent body, and alumni.
At a recent Alumni gathering, it was a thrill for me to talk to former pupils, now dynamic young women, successfully pursuing a broad spectrum of careers in medicine, the law, technology, architecture, and theatre production, among many others: using the confidence Knighton gave them.
