King Edward’s School, an HMC independent day school for boys aged 11-18 founded in 1552. King Edward’s School has been at the heart of Birmingham's life since it was founded in 1552. As the city grew so did the success of the School and for over a century it has been one of the country’s leading schools the school of Burne-Jones and Tolkien, Nobel Prizewinners Wilkins and Vane, Field Marshal Slim, Bill Oddie, Jonathan Coe, and Lee Child. Today it provides an exceptional education that is rich and varied where boys excel academically and develop the qualities to succeed.
Based in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston, the School shares a 50-acre site with King Edward VI High School for Girls, which provides extensive space and facilities matched by few-day schools in the country. King Edward’s School is a boys’ day school with around 850 pupils aged from 11 to 18. The majority of our pupils join at age 11 and continue through until they are 18 but a few boys join us at 13 and around 10 boys join the Sixth Form.
A King Edward’s education is both academically challenging and intellectually exciting. Boys enjoy considerable academic success and, as an IB World School, our pupils are prepared for a global future. The individual boy is paramount and there is great respect for, and celebration of, variety and difference. Our teaching staff are passionate about their subjects and support each boy to succeed to the best of his abilities, helping him grow and develop in the best way for him.
The School offers a rich and vibrant educational experience and we want boys to come here that not only love to learn but want to take part in all of the opportunities that the School provides. The substantial extra-curricular program and extensive opportunities to participate in sport and the performing arts means that each boy can find something to enrich his life and breed the courage, relationships, and resilience that he will need to take on the challenges of the world.
The world is changing at a dizzying pace and, when their time comes, our boys will be doing jobs that do not exist yet. They will be working with people from all parts of the globe and dealing with a climate of ever-increasing uncertainty. To thrive in such testing conditions, we need to give them a grounding that runs both broad and deep.
They need to understand how to get the best out of themselves – and other people – and learn how to work collaboratively to solve ever more complex problems. They need to learn how to manage risk and build the resilience to overcome obstacles. Above all, we want them to be curious about the world they live in and to find a happy and well-balanced life for themselves within it.
Building on centuries of tradition and innovation, we are entering a new phase of strategic planning to ensure that King Edward’s maintains its position as a leading academic school both regionally and nationally. We intend to think beyond our recent achievements to create a unique education for the mid-21st century.
