Ysgol Friars is an 11-18 co-educational comprehensive school. There has been a school bearing the name of Friars in the City of Bangor since 1557. We believe that the ethos of Friars is at the heart of its success. In both recent inspections, this received high acclaim. We value our pupils and we expect them to value the school. We believe that the school is a community and that pupils must learn that their actions affect others in that community.
We insist upon high standards of dress and behavior and actively discourage bullying. Equally, good relationships between home and school are vitally important and we hope we can build a bond that is based on mutual respect and friendly co-operation. As co-partners in the education of your child, we aim to make his/her education at Friars the happiest and successful one.
In addition to academic excellence, we pride ourselves on nurturing skills required for the world of work. The school has excellent links with the industry. We strive to ensure that our students are well prepared to meet the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood.
Our Vision: To foster enjoyment of learning to the highest standards through the creation of a civilized community where pupils share a common set of values applicable to their local, national, and global identity. The school has always enjoyed a reputation as a safe and orderly environment for learners but following increased delegation of ALN and inclusion funding to the school, we have transformed the amount and quality of support available on-site.
The post has fallen vacant following the tragic, sudden death of the previous postholder from natural causes during the summer. The Senior Leadership Team has been augmented and reorganized as a consequence and to accommodate the increasing calls upon us to support schools across the region.
Ysgol Friars is situated in the University City of Bangor. It has a tradition dating back to 1557 but also enjoys mainly modern buildings which are well-appointed with good resources and facilities. We have no unfilled posts and encountered few difficulties in staff recruitment.
The latest Estyn inspection, held in November 2017, judged all inspection areas to be good, with particular reference made to the consistently high standard of teaching across the school. We are one of only 7 “green” secondary schools in north Wales, according to the national school categorization system, and have been on a rising trend of improvement in key performance indicators for seven years.
The school is frequently asked to provide support for other institutions and is represented on the National Academy for Education Leadership stakeholders’ group, and a range of national, regional, and local organizations and partnerships.
The school is popular with parents because of its orderly environment. This September’s intake into Y7 was the highest ever. Gwynedd is a bilingual authority and there are linguistic requirements that Senior Leadership Teams must meet. Details will be provided as part of the application pack.
