Cwmfelinfach Primary School

Cwmfelinfach Primary School was built in 1908 in the center of Cwmfelinfach town. Although now a Primary School, it was previously a Junior only school for Cwmfelinfach and Ynysddu. There was an adjoining Infant school with a separate headteacher, for Cwmfelinfach only. When the Junior and Infant school was opened at Ynysddu in 1978, the school catchment area was altered to the current area of all of Cwmfelinfach, Morrisville, and Wattsville. In 1983 the Nursery was added at the bottom end of the school, in classrooms that were no longer in regular use.
The school building itself is stone and the design is one that was popular at its time. The Junior department has a central hall with classes leading off from them. The hall is used for Collective Worship and Physical Education by all children. The Infant Hall has been re-designed as a specialist support area. Over time we have been lucky to have two new demountable classes added as well as a canteen. We have a library, an ICT suite, and a spare classroom, which we use as a resource base. Between 2008 - 2010, we have remodeled three internal classrooms to create extra space for the Foundation Phase Curriculum. The schoolyard is quite spacious and provision has been made to develop an Outdoor Classroom and Forest School area, sheltered areas, a traverse wall, and an adventure play area and has beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and mountain.
We are particularly lucky to have such free access to such open countryside. All children regularly visit the local area and have regular Forest Schools lessons. We also have Ynys Hwyl within walking distance of the school. This gives us open access to a working farm and we frequently visit the site to see the farm at different times of the year.
The School is supported by a very active P.F.A. (Parents and Friends Association) that was reformed in 2009. A variety of fundraising activities are organized each year, with funds used to support all of the children and provide additional resources.
