Church Hill is a one-form entry school for children aged 5 to 11 years. One form entry means that there is one class per year group with a maximum of 30 children in each class. Children are taught in mixed ability classes. We are committed to ensuring that all children have the same opportunities. The school is on one level with disabled access to every area of the school. At Church Hill School we aim to create a stimulating and caring environment enabling all children to maximize their potential through effective teaching and learning. We aim to develop the whole child by encouraging high social and academic standards and valuing and respecting everyone involved with the school, thus benefiting the wider community.
At Church Hill we want the children to experience learning as an exciting and challenging activity that is an integral part of living as well as instill in the children a love of learning that remains with them throughout their lives. The children are encouraged to have pride in their work and achievements because they are proud to have done their best. The staff at Church Hill work as a team to ensure that all children are given the best possible opportunities to experience real success with their learning and development. We are always available to answer any questions you may have. We believe that through working together, with shared objectives, we can provide the best environment for children to experience success. We feel it is important that every member of the school helps to create a cooperative, supportive and positive atmosphere because we know that it is in such an atmosphere that children will thrive. We place great importance on the need for children to work hard because we want them to achieve high standards in all that they do at school. These aims are more likely to be achieved when parents and staff work together. It is this partnership, shared by the home and the school, which makes valuable contributions to the high standards of welfare and education we expect for the children.
The majority of children start reception in September. There are opportunities for children to visit and spend some time in the class before they start. We also offer home visits at the beginning of their first term. These are useful in helping the children to settle comfortably into their new environment. Children are introduced gradually to full-time schooling during their first term at Church Hill, starting with mornings only, progressing to staying for lunch and then the whole day. In certain cases, we can “customize” the induction process, with each request being looked at on an individual basis. When families move into the area and children join us in other year groups, every effort is made to ensure that your child settles quickly into school and soon feels secure in their new environment.
At Church Hill, we encourage a calm, purposeful and happy atmosphere to provide a safe and pleasant environment both physically and emotionally. We believe that the ethos of the school fosters a positive, caring attitude towards everyone where achievements at all levels are acknowledged. Children are encouraged to develop self-discipline so that they learn to accept responsibility for their behavior. The emphasis in the school is to praise positive behavior, attitude, and effort and to increase children’s awareness of the importance of positive relationships.
At Church Hill, we value the close relationship between home and school. We understand that your child’s education and welfare are very important to you, and we will always do our best to work with you for their benefit. Members of staff are always willing to discuss any problems that may arise, but please remember that this can be difficult at the start of the school day, and if you wish to speak to the class teacher or Headteacher, please make an appointment to meet with them.
