At Cheetwood we provide an orderly and caring community in which all pupils can learn and understand, in a happy and secure atmosphere, where British values underpin our ethos. We seek to encourage learners of all abilities to develop a sense of purpose and confidence, which will provide a secure foundation for their later education and beyond this living and working in 21st century Britain. The family atmosphere of the school indicates the value we put upon a cooperative relationship between child, staff, and parents/carers.
The multicultural nature of the school population and its inner-city locality close to the heart of Manchester are a constant source of inspiration for children’s work and activities. In 2014 Ofsted commented that “in the playground, pupils enjoy one another’s a company and show great respect and tolerance of each other’s cultural backgrounds and circumstances”.
The curriculum we provide has had much attention spent on it in recent years to ensure that it delivers the legal requirements as set out in both the Early Years Foundation and National Curriculums and is also relevant to the needs and experiences of our inner-city children. We have significantly re-worked the Y1 to Y6 curriculum so that it meets the requirements of the National Curriculum which became statutory in September 2014. We have close links with Abraham Moss High School, together with other schools in North Manchester, Salford, and Bury, essential for the smooth transition from Primary to Secondary education.
As the Admissions Authority for the community and voluntary controlled schools in Manchester, the LA is required to draft, consult on, and determine their admission arrangements. Where there are more applicants than places available the LA will apply the admission arrangements to decide which applicants will be offered places.
All parents/carers are required to apply to their home LA regards of where the school/academy they are applying to is situated. Manchester residents will apply to Manchester LA. The LA will liaise with other Admissions Authorities in Manchester and other LAs where required. Manchester LA will inform parents/carers in writing of the outcome of their application.
At Cheetwood Community Primary School we believe that pupils learn best when teaching comes from real and relevant situations. We have thus developed a creative curriculum through which to teach national curriculum foundation subjects.
Our creative curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to the September 2014 National Curriculum and carefully planned based on a good understanding of the needs of learners and their interests and skills. Each class has a ‘topic’ every half term. These topics are adapted regularly to meet the needs and interests of individual classes and to complement certain global events, for example, the Olympics.
Through science, design technology, history, and geography topics, pupils develop experimental, investigative, and questioning skills, as well as applying their learning from core subjects in these contexts. Each topic is enhanced by the creative arts art, dance, drama, and music. Teaching and learning are further enriched with educational visits or visitors to class giving pupils real experiences and depth to their knowledge.
This school offers a happy and secure foundation for your child’s education, based upon a set of core values. Cheetwood is a school with high aspirations. In 2014 Ofsted judged Cheetwood as “a good school, pupils’ attitudes to learning, their behavior in lessons and around school and their enjoyment of what they do are outstanding”.
Here at Cheetwood we greatly value the contribution that parents/carers make to our school community. The commitment to developing positive partnerships with parents/carers runs through all aspects of school life and is considered to be a strength of the school.
Parental engagement provision includes workshops and resources provided for parents/carers, information sent home about pupils and the school community, and the support provided at key transition points. It also includes the lessons, trips, and whole school events that parents/carers are invited to attend. Every year the school runs a Family Learning Week where parents/carers are invited into school to attend events such as writing workshops, class celebrations, and a whole school cookery competition.
Regular stay and play sessions are held in the EYFS and all parents/carers receive a home visit before their child joins our nursery. Parents/carers of pupils arriving outside of the usual transition times are also provided with a personalized admissions process.
When the revised curriculum was introduced into schools in September 2014 the way that pupils’ learning is assessed was also changed. Assessment is the process by which we know how well pupils are doing. It is also used to help ensure that the pupils who need targeted intervention are quickly identified, appropriately supported, and monitored so that they can fully achieve their potential.
When children enter the nursery at Cheetwood Community Primary School baseline data is collected to show where they are functioning within the EYFS framework. Children are assessed on entry to Cheetwood nursery across all areas of learning to give a baseline for their progress. This baseline is collated using a variety of sources including observations of the children from Stay and Play sessions before they start school, home visits, information from previous settings, and staff observations from the first two weeks in school. EYFS staff regularly assess children and update their ‘learning journeys’ which highlights successes and areas that need to be worked on. This assessment process continues throughout the EYFS.
The school uses Target Tracker to track attainment and progress, Target Tracker is used by 25% of English Primary schools (1 million pupils) and the standardized performance indicator used for expected progress over a year is 6 steps (5 in Y1) progress above this is expressed as accelerated progress or above expected.
