Brentfield Primary and Nursery School is a three-form entry school, situated in spacious, attractive, and quiet grounds just off Brentfield Road near the SwaminarayanTemple. The original building dates from 1940. It was doubled in size with the completion of a new block in 1991.
In 2007 a new library extension was completed. This has made the school a spacious, bright, and welcoming place. We have additional rooms for music, dance, and drama and extensive grounds with landscaped gardens all around. We have a wildlife area which the children use for their science work.
We are committed to providing a wide curriculum for each child. At the same time, we stress the importance of the basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, and mathematics. We believe that children need these as a sound educational basis for future learning.
We are a multi-cultural school, which draws its pupils mainly from our immediate neighborhood. We strongly believe that education is a partnership between the school and the home. For this reason, we actively encourage a working partnership with parents. We believe that this leads to higher standards and the general wellbeing of all children in the school.
We place a high emphasis on the teaching of Literacy at Brentfield Primary School. We aim for all our pupils to leave Year 6 with excellent skills in speaking and listening, reading, and writing forming a solid foundation for future learning and their lives ahead of them.
Our Brentfield curriculum is planned to meet the interests and needs of our pupils, with a particularly strong focus on children developing their use of English and communication skills. In addition to daily Literacy lessons, in Early Years Foundation Stage and throughout Key Stage 1, there are separate, daily phonics lessons following the Read Write Inc. framework. Guided Reading and Storytime also feature highly within our curriculum throughout the school, from Early Years to Year 6. Our curriculum has been updated to reflect the new 2014 National Curriculum.
Pupils select books from our well-stocked library which uses the Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader enables the pupils to select a wide range of books from their ability level and take a quiz on their book to assess their comprehension and understanding of what they have read. Our library is also open after school to enable parents to accompany their children and select books for reading pleasure or for research purposes.
A wide range of exciting and stimulating books are used to engage pupils with literature and inspire them to become life-long readers and writers. Vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation are the mechanics of writing and these are interwoven throughout daily Literacy lessons. Pupils are also given opportunities to put their writing skills into practice by producing extended pieces of writing linked to all areas of the curriculum and covering a broad range of genres.
At Brentfield Primary school we understand that computing and the use of different technologies are an increasingly important part of modern life. Many careers and even everyday tasks now require people to be digitally literate – to be able to both uses, as well as develop, and express ideas through different types of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Children need to be ready for their future work in adulthood and be able to play an active part in the digital world throughout their lives.
At Brentfield Primary School we aim to teach the key skills involved in using ICT as well as the ability to be able to program. We use a creative approach and, where possible, link the skills we are learning to other areas of the curriculum or to find ways to solve real-life problems.
We recognize that the challenges facing our children are not just academic. We want our pupils to become: successful learners confident individuals and responsible citizens of Britain and the World.
We aim to educate the whole child through PSHE & RE lessons, forest school, and carefully planned assemblies that aim to nurture, inspire and educate on a wide variety of topics from health & wellbeing, to world issues. We also encourage children to express their views through a wide variety of channels, including school council, an eco group, peer mentors, suggestion boxes, and by no means least – an open door to the headteacher at lunchtimes.
Three words could be used to describe IPC: Excitement, enjoyment, and engagement. It has improved opportunities for children to explore the world around us. The IPC makes learning more meaningful. There is a clear learning journey and it is often practical and fun. The IPC themes encourage self-initiated learning, and for the younger children, it helps them to develop life skills and become independent learners. The IPC covers all areas of the curriculum from literacy and numeracy to the foundation subjects of the humanities and the arts.
