Parents and carers are the most important influence in their children’s lives and it is they who ensure children come to school with the right attitude to learn. We aim to develop a close partnership with you so that every child in our care has the best possible chance of social and academic success. The term EAL is used when referring to pupils where first language at home is not English.

At Beam we aim to work together to meet the full range of needs of these children and their families, ensuring they all feel safe, valued and accepted to learn happily and effectively. For pupils who are learning English as an additional language, this includes recognizing and valuing their home language and background. As an inclusive school, we are aware that bilingualism is a strength that is embraced recognizing that EAL pupils have a valuable contribution to make. At Beam, we celebrate the diverse range of cultures, languages, and religions represented by our pupils, their families, and communities.

The school follows the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice for children who have special or additional needs. All classes in school are of mixed ability, and teachers provide work that is specially designed to match the ability of each group. They do this using a variety of materials and classroom support.

If a child has special or additional needs, parents will be informed that their child is being included on our SEN list. These children will have a Personal Learning Plan, which is reviewed with parents each term. For a small proportion of children, the school may need to involve the use of the advice of specialists outside of school. Parents will always be informed of this in advance so that they have the opportunity to ask questions and raise any concerns.

At Beam County Primary School, we are sensitive to the needs of all children and ensure that their achievements are recognized. We aim to provide all of our children with a curriculum differentiated to their needs if those needs can be met by the school. There are two members of staff in school who are responsible for children on the SEND list and to support staff and parents: Miss Mooney is an SEN co-coordinator with several years experience and has completed the National SENCo Award, and Miss Bishop is an SEN co-ordinator who has recently completed the National SENCo Award.

All adults must make sure they are safe from harm. Teachers Parents Carers adults who work in or visit our school Doctors Nurses Social Workers Police Officers Faith leaders, Youth Workers and Sports Coaches – every adult is included. If you’ve got a problem or are worried about someone,(such as a brother or sister, a friend, or someone in your class) it can be hard to know what to do. But you don’t have to cope on your own. You and all the other children have the right to grow up safe from people hurting you or failing to ensure that you are cared for. All adults have a responsibility to protect you.

The school recommends that the children are reading at home at least 3-5 times per week. Setting aside 20 minutes to introduce, read and reflect will develop both reading and comprehension skills. Reading records are used as a link between school and home to support and monitor reading. We value comments made by parents/carers and encourage the use of reading records to both celebrate successes and raise any issues related to their child’s reading skills. If you are reading on bug club, we kindly ask that you still record in your reading diary so we can keep track of the days on which your child has been reading.

At Beam, we ensure that literacy skills are taught throughout all curriculum areas. Throughout school speaking and listening, activities form an essential part of literacy teaching. Within the Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes, the discrete teaching of phonics follows the Letters and Sounds program. Many forms of writing are experienced throughout the school including story writing, instructional writing, persuasive writing, recounts, and poetry. The children enjoy regular ‘Big Writing’ sessions where they have the opportunity to demonstrate the literacy skills they have learned. In Key stage, 2 pupils will self-assess their work. Children are immersed in a rich reading environment, exploring a wide range of quality texts to support both word recognition, comprehension, and vocabulary development. Comprehension and engagement in books are encouraged through drama, ‘book talk’, and response activities including artwork, story mapping, and guided reading.
