Ashmount Primary School is a community school in the London Borough of Islington. We are a 2 form entry primary school with a nursery.

In January 2013, we relocated to a beautiful, carbon-neutral building in the middle of Crouch Hill Park with the Parkland Walk on our doorstep. Our new school is fit to educate children in the 21st century, with lovely light and airy classrooms, a glass-fronted library, a roof- top playground, growing spaces, sports facilities, and the latest ICT equipment. Around the school, you can hear the sound of the birds and from every window, you are greeted with the lush greenery of the Parkland Walk.

We are the center of a thriving multicultural community where we celebrate both our diversity and our collective responsibility. There are thirty-four home languages spoken by children at Ashmount, with communities represented from around the world. This brings a wealth of cultural experience and knowledge to our school which we see as a rich and diverse resource.

The whole school site is an inspiring and stimulating place to be and we are very proud to be the new residents of this fantastic new school.

At Ashmount, we believe in a philosophy that promotes a growth mindset in our children. The wider school community where intelligence can be increased through effort, hard work, and a commitment to one another as equals in our educational journey.

We believe in using teaching methods that motivate children to be actively engaged in their learning, promoting perseverance, resilience, and a can-do attitude. This approach nurtures children’s ability to think critically and creatively, and to collaborate and co-operate. We offer an environment where all cultures are respected and valued. We actively seek to identify and educate against prejudice through the attitudes and expectations that we encourage through our whole school ethos and the resources that we use.

We aim to work in partnership with parents, valuing their involvement within the school, recognizing their part in their children’s achievement, and promoting a positive ethos throughout the school.

We expect a high standard of behavior from the whole school community, which reflects respect for all its members and promotes a sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others.

At Ashmount we believe that learning should be exciting and challenging. We try to make sure that each school day brings new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for all our children. We intend to provide children with the best possible learning experiences to help them to become successful committed learners, confident independent individuals, and responsible citizens.

Our curriculum inspires and engages our pupils through a project-based approach. Wherever possible, children will learn contextually. Each half term, children begin a new topic through which they will learn English, maths, science, geography, history, RE, PE, and PSHE. We mix a rich cross-curricular approach to make learning fun, with discrete teaching of specialist subjects such as computing, foreign languages, music, and physical education. At Ashmount music is taught by specialist teachers in our music and drama studio.

We have themed learning weeks throughout the year, including Arts Week, STEM Week, and Sports and Healthy Living Week. Our school building, on the edge of the tree-lined Parkland Walk, provides children with a unique and enriching learning environment.

We teach Phonics following the Letters and Sounds program. Letters and Sounds is a detailed and systematic program for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

Woven throughout the curriculum, and the broader experiences the children have is the promotion of fundamental British values. There is an emphasis on promoting the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of the child as well as the broader Ashmount community. Understanding where and how a child can not only fit in but also contribute to making the world a better place is essential for us here. Opportunities for children to learn and appreciate British values, along with developing spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally, are planned for carefully. We have an active school council and every child at the school is a member.

At Ashmount pupils in our Nursery and Reception Classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This curriculum is play-based and involves children's self-selecting activities.
