The Alamiyah School stems from a project which began in 2005 with a determined group of home-schooling parents who were eager to create a positive learning environment for their children one that would foster not only a love of knowledge but give the children a moral framework and nurture each child’s unique genius. The project was subsequently joined by a group of educational professionals and evolved into the Alamiyah Pre-school. We registered as an independent school (Alamiyah School) in 2017 allowing us to cater to children from ages 3-9 years.
The Alamiyah School is inspired by the Prophetic Tradition and will use a curriculum infused with the prophetic stories, arts, and sciences. The Montessori approach to early years is the framework upon which the school is based, thus creating an educational experience based on ancient wisdom and modern discoveries. The Montessori approach creates an environment that offers each child the opportunity to express and develop their individuality and their innate need to learn. It is based on the natural laws of human development (fitra) confirmed by scientific advances and is therefore perfectly in line with a prophetic model for education. The curriculum is child-centered, encourages independence, and fosters empathy and compassion.
The project is lead by an enthusiastic group of teachers trained in the Montessori approach, with many years of experience with young children. Our teachers are professionals in their field and have a deeply rooted interest in education. Each of them has come to appreciate the importance of early years learning in a child’s education and development.
We intend to encourage and preserve the natural inclination of our children through a stimulating and beautiful environment. It is for this reason that we chose to adopt a Montessori approach to learning which emphasizes the importance of the environment in the child’s understanding of the world. Our approach is child-centered, following the interests and development of each child and nurturing independence in the child. This lays an excellent foundation for all aspects of life and later education.
The teachers in our school are active learners who seek to embody the prophetic example and are therefore fitting role models. They are facilitators to learning who observe the child and make available to them material appropriate to their stage of development. They are attentive and nourish the child’s curiosity and excitement in their exploration and discovery of the world Parental Partnership Parents are the first teachers and most important people in a child’s life. It is therefore essential to build strong relationships between home and the school which complement one another. An individualized learning experience for a child may only occur if it involves the teacher, the child, and the parent.
At ‘Alamiyah we have introductory sessions, coffee mornings, and workshops to help parents understand the methods used in the school firsthand and how children benefit from these being incorporated into the home. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is another aspect of the parent partnership with the school. The PTA is comprised of parents, school staff, and members of the management committee and acts as an important link between parents and the school. It also serves as a support to the school with volunteers and donations and to coordinate essential fundraising and events for the growth and development of the School. We aim to have social events, open days, school performances by the children, fundraisers, and other functions which parents will be invited to join in with to build the school community. Parents are therefore encouraged to be actively involved in school life and also in the development of the ‘Alamiyah School through the many opportunities available Insha’Allah.
When the children first enter the Montessori classroom they are given activities that are often found in the home. Children are eager to use the familiar activities in this part of the curriculum, which acts as a bridge between home and school. They help prepare the child for all the other areas of the curriculum by developing coordination, concentration, muscular development, independence, and cultivating specific skills needed for later work in mathematics, language, and all other areas.
The Montessori method of teaching is based upon following each child’s natural path of development. The teachers will closely observe your child see what stage of development the child is at and what activities can help your child develop further. Teachers will pay special attention to your child’s interests and plan group lessons to further their interest. Parents are encouraged to inform teachers of any interests their child may have.
Language preparation is found throughout the classroom and is incorporated into much of the equipment allowing the children to develop each of the specific skills needed for later language work. The child also learns from stories, song, and rhyme and moves through sound recognition and sound differentiation activities. We use a phonetic alphabet and interesting, fun activities to move the child towards reading and writing at their own pace.
Giving children early exposure to the Arabic language is important since it is at this early age that they absorb second and third languages with ease. This early exposure will greatly speed their learning of the language in later years. Therefore Arabic words, phrases, songs, and prayers are spoken and recited throughout the day with an emphasis on correct pronunciation (Tajweed). Also, oral Arabic lessons are presented by an Arabic and Quran teacher to individual children and small groups. These lessons initially focus on vocabulary building and the introduction of dual, then later progress to memorization of duas, short surahs, and Arabic conversation. When they are ready, children are introduced to Arabic reading and writing using the Montessori approach.
