Cal State Fullerton is a leading campus of the CSU, serving as an intellectual and cultural center for Southern California and the driver of workforce and economic development. We are an emerging national model for supporting student success through innovative high-impact educational and co-curricular experiences, including faculty-student collaborative research.
General Education provides the foundation of university education. It is designed to give students a breadth of knowledge and understanding across science, social science, arts, and humanities. It is also designed to help students develop broadly applicable skills such as critical thinking and writing, enhance their capacity for lifelong learning, and strengthen their ability to contribute effectively within our culturally diverse society.
The General Education Program provides a common intellectual experience for all students regardless of their primary. It enhances their awareness of themselves in a complex universe, drawing upon multiple points of view and preparing them for full participation in professional and civic life. Through the thoughtful completion of the General Education Program, students will acquire knowledge of diverse disciplinary perspectives, develop skills for analyzing new situations and problems, and gain self-awareness and an understanding of their role in both local and global communities.
Launched in 2005, Liberal Education and America's Promise (LEAP) is a national public advocacy and campus action initiative. LEAP champions the importance of a liberal education—for individual students and a nation dependent on economic creativity and democratic vitality.
LEAP responds to contemporary demands for more college-educated workers and more engaged and informed citizens. Today, and in the years to come, college graduates need higher levels of learning and knowledge and strong intellectual and practical skills to navigate this more demanding environment successfully and responsibly. Through LEAP, hundreds of campuses are making far-reaching educational changes to help all their students—whatever their chosen field of study—acquire the broad knowledge, higher-order capacities, and real-world experience they need to thrive economically globally engaged democracy.
LEAP leaders also work to engage the public with core questions about what matters in college and connect employers and educators as they build new partnerships and make a case for the importance of liberal education in a global economy and our diverse democracy.
At Cal State Fullerton, students and community members can take advantage of a wide range of testing programs and related services to support their educational, career, and personal goals. The University Testing Center provides information and registration materials. It serves as a testing site for several national, statewide and institutional testing programs required for admission to the University, placement in classes, and graduation.
The University Testing Center staff members, including room supervisors and proctors who administer the Saturday testing programs, are committed to providing an environment where all examinees have the opportunity to succeed and to perform to the best of their ability regardless of age, ethnicity, culture, academic experience, economic circumstances or disability.
The mission of the Office of Disability Support Services at California State University, Fullerton, is to increase access and retention for students with permanent and temporary disabilities by ensuring equitable treatment in all aspects of campus life. The program acts as a catalyst and agent for compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations mandating equal opportunity and access for persons with disabilities. Disability Support Services provides co-curricular and academically related services that empower students with disabilities to achieve academic and personal self-determination.
California State University, Fullerton, is a major regional university in a vital, flourishing area that includes Orange County, metropolitan Los Angeles, and the expanding Inland Empire. The beautiful, 236-acre campus is set in Fullerton in north Orange County, about 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles and about 21 miles from nearby beaches. Cal State Fullerton has more than 37,000 students and approximately 1,800 full- and part-time faculty members. The University offers 107-degree programs in eight colleges. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CSUF is fourth in the nation for the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to minority students and first in California for the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics. In 1957, Cal State Fullerton became the 12th state college in California to be authorized by the Legislature as a degree-granting institution.
The following year, a site was designated for the campus to be established in northeast Fullerton. The property was purchased in 1959. This is the same year that Dr. William B. Langsforf was appointed as the school's founding president. Today, Cal State Fullerton is a comprehensive, regional university with a main campus that consists of 29 permanent buildings, a picturesque 26-acre Arboretum, and student residence halls. The campus also features the Student Recreation Center, a $40.6-million, two-story 95,000-square-foot facility located west of Titan Gym. The Performing Arts Center is a $48-million complex that provides state-of-the-art facilities for audiences and performers alike and instructional facilities for students.
