Karachi Institute of Power Engineering (KINPOE) has developed a qualified workforce in Nuclear Power Technology. KINPOE is affiliated with the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences for the award of Master of Science degree in Nuclear Power; previously, it was affiliated with NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi to award Master of Engineering Degree in Nuclear Power Engineering.
Initially, KINPOE functioned as the Karachi Nuclear Power Training Centre (KNPTC). For the first two decades, KNPTC organized a one-year post-graduate training program for engineers & technicians nearly for the operation and maintenance of KANUPP. The academic programs of KNPTC underwent many revisions to increase emphasis on developing better analytical and design skills. In 1993, the master's degree program in nuclear power engineering was started KINPOE is uniquely qualified for this program.
The design, construction, and operation of a power plant and its associated facilities require many science and engineering areas. To provide a broad-based technical knowledge, KINPOE offers the degree of Master of Science in Nuclear Power Engineering to candidates from diverse engineering and scientific backgrounds.
All candidates are offered a fellowship to undertake this course. The academic program is of two-year duration, spread over a seven-week zero semester and five regular semesters of 14 weeks each. Selected candidates should be ready to undertake serious studies. KINPOE and CHASCENT offer a broad-based Post-Graduate Training Program (PGTP), where candidates from diverse engineering backgrounds are admitted.
The training program consists of a six-week orientation under the zeroeth semester's name, followed by two regular semesters of classroom training, lab work & assessments at each level. After the end of the second semester, the candidates will perform on-job training and plant visits. The entire program covers one year. Diploma holders and Science graduates trained in necessary nuclear technology are essential for the safe operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities. For this purpose, KINPOE has offered a one-year Post Diploma Training Program (PDTP) in Nuclear Power Plant Technology since 1973.
The training includes classroom instructions, laboratory experiments, and field visits. Upon completing successful training, selected candidates may be appointed as Tech-1. In contrast, Science graduates may be appointed as Scientific Assistant-1 and can be assigned tasks related to operation or maintenance in nuclear power plants or related installations.
