Sugiyama Jogakuen was founded in 1905 as a sewing school. Forty-four years later, it established the Sugiyama Jogakuen University, which celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in 2009. Our university began after World War Ⅱ with the School of Home Economics as a single-department college but has evolved over the years in response to changes in society and our students' educational needs. Today it has seven undergraduate programs, the largest number among universities for women in this country.
We have been offering outstanding education to women. Our school has expanded into a comprehensive educational institution with approximately 8,400 students spanning our kindergarten, primary school, junior and senior high schools, and university (undergraduate and graduate schools). At present, our university has seven undergraduate programs, the largest number among women's universities in this country, with the most recent addition being the School of Nursing, established in April 2010.
Over the intervening decades, while always keeping to our school motto "Nurturing Humanity," we have provided closely supervised teaching is deliberately kept, small classes. The style of teaching has helped each student realize her potential and achieve her individual goals. As a result, our fulfilled graduates are highly regarded in Japanese society.

Our society is faced with many challenges, such as an aging population with low birthrates, internationalization, and the digitalization of information. As a result of the demands that grow out of these challenges, ever-evolving education is necessary for women. At Sugiyama Jogakuen University, we are always striving to meet this ongoing necessity, and we assure you that you can expect results from our efforts.
The bridge located on North-South Hill at Hoshigaoka campus is named "Ningen (Humanity) Bridge." And in the monument erected in the vicinity of the bridge is engraved the message "Nurturing Humanity." And this is the core idea for what the founder president of Sugiyama Jogakuen, Masakazu Sugiyama, established Sugiyama Jogakuen, and is the educational philosophy that we have been following for the past 100 years. The education at Sugiyama Jogakuen not only aspires for the accumulation of knowledge and skills but also for our development as human beings. The social significance of respect for others and respect for humanity is vital. Also, the "Nurturing" in "Nurturing Humanity" is not only for a statement. It is something that we must always keep in mind and try to put into practice.
Sugiyama Jogakuen has committed itself to the motto "Nurturing Humanity." Today, the world is confronted with crimes, environmental issues, terrorism, and conflicts that were unimaginable in the past, and these dangers may threaten the human spirit. In the face of these challenges, it is essential to respect human dignity and preserve the humanism that our motto "Nurturing Humanity" represents. At Sugiyama Jogakuen, we act out our motto as we nurture these vital aspects of humanity through education and learning. We believe that students of all ages need to study and strive to realize the importance of "Nurturing Humanity" in their own lives. This is not an easy goal to achieve but one to which we are dedicated.
