Sugiyama Jogakuen was founded in 1905 as a sewing school. Forty-four years later, it established the Sugiyama Jogakuen University, which celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in 2009. Our university began after World War Ⅱ with the School of Home Economics as a single-department college but has evolved over the years in response to changes in society and our students' educational needs. Today it has seven undergraduate programs, the largest number among universities for women in this country. We have been offering outstanding education to women. Our school has expanded into a comprehensive educational institution with approximately 8,400 students spanning our kindergarten, primary school, junior and senior high schools, and university (undergraduate and graduate schools). At present, our university has seven undergraduate programs, the largest number among women's universities in this country, with the most recent addition being the School of Nursing, established in April 2010. Over the intervening decades, while always keeping to our school motto "Nurturing Humanity," we have provided closely supervised teaching is deliberately kept, small classes. The style of teaching has helped each student realize her potential and achieve her individual goals. As a result, our fulfilled graduates are highly regarded in Japanese society. The bridge located on North-South Hill at Hoshigaoka campus is named "Ningen (Humanity) Bridge." And in the monument erected in the vicinity of the bridge is engraved the message "Nurturing Humanity." And this is the core idea for what the founder president of Sugiyama Jogakuen, Masakazu Sugiyama, established Sugiyama Jogakuen, and is the educational philosophy that we have been following for the past 100 years. The education at Sugiyama Jogakuen not only aspires for the accumulation of knowledge and skills but also for our development as human beings. The social significance of respect for others and respect for humanity is vital. Also, the "Nurturing" in "Nurturing Humanity" is not only for a statement. It is something that we must always keep in mind and try to put into practice. Sugiyama Jogakuen has committed itself to the motto "Nurturing Humanity." Today, the world is confronted with crimes, environmental issues, terrorism, and conflicts that were unimaginable in the past, and these dangers may threaten the human spirit. In the face of these challenges, it is essential to respect human dignity and preserve the humanism that our motto "Nurturing Humanity" represents. Chikushi Jogakuen University's founding principles are based on the teachings of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. In line with our motto of "self-reflection, harmony, and gratitude," our fundamental philosophy is to create a new era by encouraging young women to wake up to the limitless possibilities of life and nurture individuals who can realize their true potential in society. Our goal is to help students learn how to live more profound and more fulfilling lives during their time at the university and guide them to develop into independent women. The International Exchange Center provides support to students aiming to study overseas, such as assistance with language learning and information and consultations on studying and training abroad. It also guides students through the procedures for going overseas and gives general support with student life while students are out of the country. The center also supports international students to ensure they make the most of their time at our university, including help with visa renewals and other procedures, learning consultations, and career advice. Chikushi Jogakuen University offers exchange programs to students from partner universities worldwide on a semester or full academic-year basis. Students participating in the program will be offered a selection of courses in the "Japan Studies Program," which mainly focus on Japanese Language, Business, and Japanese Culture. Students will also be given a chance to learn flower arrangement, tea ceremony, and Buddhism. Besides, through interaction with Japanese students, international students will expand their Japanese language ability and are provided many opportunities for understanding Japanese culture. Chikushi Jogakuen University's campus is blessed with the beautiful nature of Dazaifu. Students have various opportunities to develop their individuality and capabilities, ranging from academic experiences to club and group activities, after-school activities, and personal time. The favorable climate of the campus helps foster a sense of independence and personal growth. Enjoy a great campus life through the five senses! The library contains a collection of approximately 240,000 Japanese and Western books and about 1,100 humanities and sciences journals and general periodical titles. There is also an extensive audiovisual section, which includes booths for DVDs and PCs and many other services. The Learning Support Center is a recently added facility designed to respond flexibly to various learning needs by providing a wide variety of learning environments: a group work area, a presentation court, a place for casual meetings/discussions with friends, and a relaxation area. "Lotus" Convenience Store sells boxed lunches, snacks, stationery and books, and offers various services, including introductions to student accommodations and the processing of applications for various certification exams. There are seven IT-related facilities located on the campus. Business software that is useful for certification exams has been installed on every computer. The university cafeteria, which is stylish, clean, and well-lit with natural sunlight, offers various tasty and nutritious lunch choices. None every corner of the campus, there is an authentic Japanese-style tea house used for practicing and performing traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. View full university
