Gifu Pharmaceutical University (GPU) is a Japanese public university located in Gifu and supported by the Gifu City government. The predecessor of GPU Pharmacy School was founded in 1932 and established as a university in 1948. There have been considerable efforts made over the past 80 years to achieve excellence in university research and education. GPU offered a Master’s degree program for the first time in 1953, followed by a Doctoral program in 1965. GPU consists of two departments,
Department of Pharmacy with a six-year undergraduate course and Department of Pharmaceutical Science with a four-year undergraduate course. Department of Pharmacy offers hands-on training for future pharmacists to work with doctors and nurses. At the same time, the Department of Pharmaceutical Science produces highly-trained researchers and medical professionals. With the establishment of our new headquarter in 2011, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) and GPU inaugurated the first joint graduate school providing higher quality learning environments and postgraduate education. The graduate school aims to produce medical professionals in the field of medicines, medical services, and medical devices.
GPU is ranked among the best colleges of pharmacy in the nation. Our motto is, “Strong, Fair, and Bright,” contributing to humanity. GPU has been educating its students in order to be able to contribute to social health and welfare based on the concepts of Green Pharmacy and the environmentally friendly design of chemical products and processes. With a pool of talented professors, GPU produced more than 11.000 quality pharmacists, researchers, and developers who joined the workforce at pharmaceutical companies, medical and environmental institutions in Japan and overseas. Besides, GPU is characterized by highly qualified teachers, high-quality research, and bright students. Our faculty members have developed a cutting-edge curriculum, which, when coupled with life-long learning, will provide our graduates with the requisite professional foundation to practice the profession of pharmacy at a too high level for many decades to come.
In the Department of Pharmacy, we strive to develop students who have the skills, knowledge, and professionalism regarding the dosage, dispensing, and patient care under clinical pharmacy practices. We stress a humanistic approach based on high ethical standards. Some students also work as civil servants in public health, private companies, and industries that focus on pharmaceutical research.
Through an extended six-year curriculum, students acquire standard skill sets and move on to the acquisition of more advanced skills through internships at our pharmacy, retail pharmacies, and those located in hospitals.
Especially, GPU has established more profound relationships with Pharmaceutical University of China and Zhejiang University by exchanging faculty members or students. We also established overseas scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad using the foundation donated by an alumnus, Mr. Hajime Murayama, in 2013. By these scholarships, students have been sent to the University of Florida and developed a cultural understanding.
