The Bunkyo University Foundation is an academic group with four campuses. The Administrative Foundation Office and the University's Secretarial Department is located at the Hatanodai campus in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward. There are also three schools attached to the university - a kindergarten, a junior high school, and a senior high school. Including the student enrollment in the kindergarten, 1,180 students are attending these schools.
The Bunkyo University Foundation was established in 1927 with a founding spirit and educational philosophy of "The Rissho Spirit (Standing up for Truth)" and has developed as of today into a comprehensive group of schools which includes a kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, foreign student department, seven faculties in the four-year college and five graduate schools.
The school's original educational philosophy, "The Rissho Spirit (Standing up for Truth)," derives from the Lotus Sutra's spirit as mastered by the Buddhist saint, Nichiren. It implies the affirmation of humanity's absolute value and its unlimited potential for development and thus hopes for the realization of an ideal society. This is the original premise for "Empathy for All Humanity", which takes its basis the principle of the dignity of all life.
The spirit of "Empathy for All Humanity" consists, above all, of the "belief in the importance of all life." That is to say, the life of each one of us, no matter whose life it may be, is so precious as to be irreplaceable and of the utmost importance. The spirit of "Empathy for All Humanity" is the heartfelt affirmation of the principles of tolerance, respect, forgiveness, and sympathy for one another, as well as the hope that a society based on those principles will inevitably be realized.
Bunkyo University Foundation, what is most important to kindergarteners, primary and secondary school pupils, and university students in gaining knowledge, skills, and techniques is to what end this knowledge and these skills will be put to use. What is most important then is that the spirit of "Empathy for All Humanity" is made to form the core of their characters because fundamentally, the real aim of education is character formation.
Bunkyo University Foundation believes that the practical application of education based on "Empathy for All Humanity" boils down to the "desire to see the faces of Kindergarteners, primary and secondary school pupils, and university students shining happily, never sad, in their experience of the learning process" and a "commitment to protect the children from sorrow." Thus, this institution is producing and advancing the spirit of "Empathy for All Humanity" between its staff and the children, amongst the children themselves, and between staff members.
The teaching staff of the Bunkyo University Foundation has devoted themselves to providing individual education; thus, the teachers understand the needs of every student at the kindergarten, the elementary school, the junior high school, the senior high school, the university, and the graduate schools.
In light of the rapid internationalization of Japanese society, the junior high school, the senior high school, and the university have made academic affiliation contracts with educational institutions in countries such as China, South Korea, U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand. Under these contracts, most Bunkyo partner schools and the international institutions have promoted student intercultural exchanges, including exchange programs. Students from Bunkyo and foreign universities study at each other's schools.
The Bunkyo University Foundation has stepped up efforts to deepen relations between its schools and has striven to offer education in a manner that would increase the satisfaction of all students. Graduates of the Bunkyo University Foundation have played significant roles in various communities and have received high acclaim for their contributions and society's achievements. Bunkyo University Foundation is resolved to serve society's interest by providing education aimed at promoting "Empathy for All Humanity," which is the foundation for the global age.
