Oman Medical College (OMC) is a reputed private medical school in the Sultanate of Oman offering degrees in medicine and pharmacy. The curriculum and academic leadership are provided by the West Virginia University School of medicine in the United States of America. The Oman Ministry of Higher Education closely monitors premed, medical and pharmacy education at OMC. The Government supports the College by providing developmental funding, students' sponsorship, and clinical teaching facilities at the 400-bed Sohar Regional Hospital.
OMC's grading standard is a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F), plus a narrative evaluation from the department or unit. Academic advancement (promotion) is not automatic. Promotion to the next term requires evidence of satisfactory performance-based achievement. A standing committee called the Academic and Professional Standards Committee meets every semester to review each student's academic file and recommend the dean. The committee's goal is to ensure that each student meets (or is working toward meeting) all of the program's requirements, not just the requirements for passing specific courses. Early and frequent complete review of each student's record permits the committee to spot deficiencies early and recommend courses of action that will remediate any deficiencies.
It is not the intent of the committee to find reasons to dismiss students from the program. Instead, the committee intends to identify deficiencies or weaknesses early so that that action can be taken to allow students to stay in the program and ultimately become competent physicians.
OMC has a small international student population from GCC, the Asian continent, and the Middle East. OMC has developed an office to address the issues of the international students for appropriate resolutions.
OMC encourages the admission of private students, mainly expatriates. Most of them brought up in the country and are familiar with the culture, the values, and the way of life. They are drawn from different nationalities, although they are broadly classified as expatriates. OMC organizes formal meetings with the international students, attended by the Dean, Deputy Dean, HR Director, and the facility management team. These sessions discuss their issues and try to find possible solutions. The Student Affairs Office at Sohar organizes special meetings annually with the international students to address their problems. In contrast, the Assistant to the Registrar at Baushar is responsible for International Student Affairs.
OMC's guidance and counseling center provide confidential, free guidance and counseling services for all students who have enrolled for the Pre Medicine and the Pharmacy course. Walk-in consultations, individual and group counseling services are available.
The mission of the Office of Counseling Services is to assist students in transitioning from higher secondary school to College towards professional courses, which requires more significant student commitment in order to ensure success. The guidance and counseling center runs study skill sessions for beginners in the foundation program & caters to their mental, social and personal needs.
If required, students are referred to psychiatric and medical services; they are referred to the department of behavioral science and psychiatry at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital.
The Foundation at OMC is a one-year program with two 16-week semesters and one 8-week semester. As specified by the Oman Academic Standards, the GFP prepares you in four learning areas: English, Mathematics, Information Technology, and Study Skills. During the program, you are enrolled in zero-credit courses in the four areas. You will also be exposed to preparatory material in the life sciences, such as Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Chemistry, to prepare you for the difficult transition from secondary to college-level courses in these subjects.
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program of Oman Medical College consists of six years of coursework.
