CAS Sur is a public college that offers a range of programs in the field of Applied Sciences. As planned, one of the MOHE s Centres of Excellence, the College awards degrees in Information Technology, Mass Communication, and Applied Biotechnology.
The College was founded in 1987 in Sur. Sur College can be seen as the leading scientific institution and the witness to a thriving civilization in the eastern part of Oman. As well as Sur city is a Pearl of the eastern coast and is known to tourists through Forts, handicap, industries, fisheries, and agriculture. Sur city is located on the east coast of Oman and after three and a half hours drive from the city leadership Muscat. The city is a center for the shipbuilding industry, including traditional and the turtle s site at the top of jeans.
The admission of students of both genders is under the conditions stated by the Ministry of Higher Education. The student used to choose among several disciplines, "Geography - History - Math / Computer - Islamic studies - studies of language (Arabic - English) - Science (Chemistry - Physics - Biology). The six colleges, including the Sur College, have recently converted to colleges of Applied sciences taught in English-language. The programs included are information technology, communication Studies, and Applied Biotechnology.
Sur CAS was created similar to other CAS as Higher Education Institution in 2005/2006, replacing the previous Colleges of Education. They work in various fields of knowledge to contribute to the (development of the Omani Society, taking into account the local, regional, and global evolution. It is also because we aspire to reach a higher level of excellence that Sur CAS has started Quality Assurance in 2011/2012.
Students admitted into the foundation program of the colleges of Applied Sciences are required to sit for an English placement test at the beginning of the first semester, which is carried out in the Autumn Semester orientation week. They will be streamed into four levels (A, B, C, and D) in light of their performance on the test.
Our mission is to provide high-quality programs that meet national and regional employment needs, prepare students for postgraduate studies and lifelong learning, equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel as future professionals and contribute to Oman's economy and society. The LRC's primary goal is to enhance student learning. To achieve this goal, the LRC provides the College community with current materials and resources, access to the Internet for research and study, and educational technologies to promote a learner-centered environment. To date, considerable progress has been made in equipping the Centre of Specialization according to international standards.
The LRC will strive to take full advantage of its information resources and technology to serve best the research needs of CAS-Sur's students and faculty.
The Research Department has been established to manage research affairs in the College. It endeavors to help advance scientific research and make it reach the highest possible levels. Through its various activities—such as research management, promotion, support, follow-up, and the application of research outcomes—the Department seeks to develop knowledge and ultimately serve the society in various fields of knowledge.
The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree is a four year 128 credit hour program taught in English, designed to produce competent graduates in their major disciplines and IT in general graduates who are ready to be involved in developing the Omani industry. As the name "Colleges of Applied Sciences" suggests, our students are exposed to significant practical work and, where possible, linkages with the Omani industry are being developed and exploited. The BIT is offered in the CAS campuses of Sohar, Ibri, Rustaq, Sur, and Salalah.
The BIT program contains a core of mainstream IT courses, which expose our graduates to the concepts and topics about which all who work in the IT field should be familiar. Typically, web design and development software design and implementation information systems analysis and design operating systems networks database IT security professional ethics and such analytical courses as discrete mathematics and data structures. IT is a fast-moving field; however, so space has been left in the program, which can be filled with the time's innovations, ensuring our graduates are aware of the latest IT trends. Presently the four majors of the BIT are Software Development, Data Management, IT Security, and Networks. The majors permit our students to explore their chosen field in greater depth with the addition of highly focused and specialized courses.
