The desire to establish UMMI received a positive response from City, Local, and Regency Government, hoping that Muhammadiyah could pioneer the human resource development relevant to future development demands. The ex-secretariat building of Sukabumi Regency, located at Jalan R. Syamsudin, S.H. Nomor 50 Sukabumi, was given to Muhammadiyah Confederation as a form of support from the Government of Sukabumi Regency. The building then became the campus of UMMI.
After the sale and purchase agreement with terms agreed by both sides was held, right on 5 November 2002 (29 Sya'ban 1423 Hijriyah), then the former Sukabumi Regency Office was located on Jalan R. Syamsudin, S.H. No. 50 Sukabumi was officially used as a campus of UMMI. That handover event has become the pioneer of UMMI establishment in a strategic place. And the campus has become a reputable private university in Sukabumi City.
After that handover event, a letter of consideration of the UMMI establishment was published by the Directorate General of Higher Education in July 2002. A year later, the Directorate General of Higher Education published Letter of Decree of Operational Permit Number 81/D/2003 on 13 June 2003. Based on that operational license, UMMI had ten departments, and after ten years, UMMI has five faculties consisted of 14 departments.
The vision is to realize the Muhammadiyah University of Sukabumi, advanced in science, and Al-Islam in 2022. Missions are Implementing a higher education that brings up skillful, competent, faithful, and characterized experts and professionals in several fields. Performing learning activities based on accurate and recent research results could raise the will of critical thinking ability. Performing and developing fundamental researches and adaptive research which have benefits for humanity. Developing and disseminating of Science, Technology, and Social to the public to improve life quality and development of Muhammadiyah Associations. Producing qualified and Islamic characterized graduates who have competencies, good work ethic, and competitiveness.
Developing Science, Technology, and Social based on Al-Qur'an and Sunnah. Improving academic competence and professionalism of lecturer and students through excellent research. Improving the result of research through problem-solving based research development. Disseminating and implementing the result of researches for development and empowerment through community service activities. Preparing UMMI as a study center and Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah development gradually and systematically.
