Surgut State University was founded in May 1993. The university's development's primary goal is to transform into a new type of University, supporting and providing innovative economic development of the region through concentration of intellectual potential, modern scientific and educational infrastructure, and their approach to regional business needs.
The University implements higher education programs on a wide range of areas and specialties based on six educational and scientific institutions: Humanitarian Education and Sport, the State and Law, Natural and Technical Sciences, Economics and Management, Medical and Polytechnic Institutions. Continuous education principles are being introduced, and training clusters "school - college - university - enterprise" are built. Professional retraining and further training of specialists is carried out.
The university's research activities' priority areas are IT-technologies, Oil chemistry, Nature management, Ecology, Medicine of the North. The University has the most extensive scientific library in the region with a fund of over 600 000 volumes. The SSU Board of Trustees includes the representatives of Surgut's business, administrative, social, and political circles, the Federal, Tyumen Regional, and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area legislative assemblies Surgut City Council. The University has good traditions of student self-government. The graduates of Surgut State University are in demand; most young specialists have been employed in the region.
