New scientific staff's acute need allowed Novosibirsk State University to occupy a unique position: new educational and sports buildings and dormitories were built very quickly. The academic staff was trained quickly, and the University opened even earlier than many scientific institutes. The scientists were enthusiasts who felt their development was limited in other large cities. They set out to create Siberia's most unique educational project. They were the people who decided what Novosibirsk State University should be, defining and defending its principles and mission.
Novosibirsk State University quickly grew. During the first nine years, 900 professionals were trained within its walls. It consisted of 8 departments, was staffed with 270 teachers, and conducted research in 46 sections. The Department of Physics and the Mechanics and Mathematics Department almost immediately spun off the Department of Natural Sciences. Just a few years later, the Department of Humanities has established and the Department of Geology and Geophysics. In 20 years 2000, Novosibirsk State University graduates worked in various institutions of SB USSR AS, and 500 members of the Academy of Sciences were lecturing at the University. The project of merging with academic institutions was a success.
Novosibirsk state university is located in the world-famous scientific center – Akademgorodok. 80% of NSU faculty members are scientists from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. So education is carried out in close connection with world-class scientific achievements. Everything is within walking distance to our compact campus: university dormitories, sports center, stadium,35 scientific institutes, and an innovative technopark (Academpark) are within 10 minutes walk from the campus.
NSU provides a modern, internationally competitive, classical fundamental education. We pay special attention to the comprehensive development of each student's. Education at NSU will teach you how to think more broadly, find creative solutions, and achieve success in any field. Together with lectures and seminars, our education includes fieldwork: all students spend part of their summer doing practical work in the field starting in their first years of study. NSU is a national research university and is closely linked to science. 80% of NSU teachers are active researchers affiliated with the Russian Academy of Science. Therefore, students get access to first-hand scientific knowledge and can practice their skills in 138 scientific laboratories based at the University and 35 institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
NSU provides equal access to all its students, including those with severe health limitations: wheelchair users, visually impaired students, students with severe forms of common diseases (infantile cerebral paralysis, etc.). We value every student, and we are convinced that every person deserves equal opportunities, including the opportunity to study together with a large community of fellow students.
Novosibirsk state university is a unique place where education and science intersect. These two fields are inseparable here: they help the University move forward by opening incredible work opportunities and further studies to NSU students and graduates. The University closely cooperates with the research institutes: more than a hundred research areas developed worldwide are available for our students to explore. This allows NSU students to engage in real, serious science from the early years of their study and to become part of the international scientific community.
Novosibirsk state university holds the leading positions in physics and natural sciences, being among the world's best universities. The leading positions are ensured by participation in international collaborations and the wide recognition of research outcomes. For example, in 2015, the European center for nuclear research chose to build a supercollider using the model developed by the scientists working at the Institute of nuclear physics (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) also NSU professors, and graduates. With the traditional scientific disciplines, new areas are now being developed at NSU: engineering, instrumentation, astrophysics, and many more. The University now demonstrates the increasing amount of publications and citations in international journals. The number of graduate students and young faculty members is also growing. Of course, the location of NSU in the academic town (Akademgorodok) provides the intellectual environment for every student's professional development, creates the ground for the emergence of new interdisciplinary research areas, and for the integration of science with business and society.
