The History of Kirov State Medical University starts on the 2nd of August, 1987; Kirov State Medical University is one of the country's youngest medical universities. Since 1987, we train specialists in the most humane profession in the world. During the years of productive work, the University has become one of Russia's leading medical schools, showing its confidence in the international medical arena and steadily competing with even more prominent universities.
Nowadays, there are four faculties in the University: General Medicine, Pediatric, Stomatological, Social-economic. There also is a Pre-University Training Center, an Institute of Postgraduate Education. Clinic of Kirov SMU can accommodate more than 100 beds. The University also has the Anatomical Museum, the Museum of History of the University, and the Center of Manipulative Skills. The University conducts educational activity for nine programs of higher education, including the following specialties: "General medicine," "Pediatrics," "Medical biochemistry ", "Stomatology", "Clinical psychology" and the areas of training: "Social work", "Nursing care", "Merchandising and expertise of goods", "Management", as well as 64 postgraduate educational programs in residency or internship, and also 21 specialties at the graduate school.
The University trains more than 3 thousand Russian and international students, residents, and auditors. Within 30 years of its existence, the University has trained more than 6,000 professionals who work in all healthcare institutions in the Kirov region, Komi Republic and Mari El. In other regions of the country, many graduates have successfully defended their candidate and doctoral dissertations and work at the university; there are heads of departments and lecturers. The University is proud of its alumni. Positive feedback from employers shows the high quality of education, a proactive approach to life, and our graduates' high intellectual capacity. The University formed scientific schools, which are well known in the country: Surgery (corresponding member of RAMS prof. V.A. Zhuravlev, Honorary Doctor of Russia prof. V.A. Bakhtin), Rheumatology (prof. B.F. Nemtsov), Pediatrics (prof. Y.Y. Illek), Obstetrics and Gynecology (prof. S.A. Dvoryanskii), Social Medicine, Medical Ecology and Hygiene (prof. B.A. Petrov), Neurology and Neurosurgery (prof. B.N. Bein) and many others.
Kirov State Medical University is actively developing its international affairs: for the moment, the University has signed cooperation agreements with 14 foreign universities, including Andijan State Medical Institute (Uzbekistan), Vitebsk State Medical University (Belarus), Samarkand State Medical University, Medical Faculty of Munich University Ludwig Maximilian (Germany), University of Florence and others. Besides, the University developed a plan of academic mobility; the participation in international exchanges is organized, contacts with the partners are established. In the University, there are all necessary conditions for the harmonious development of personality: performance groups, creative clubs and sports clubs, active student council, and the students' committee.
The University has a modern material and technical base. Students learn in well-equipped classrooms, computer labs with modern office equipment. The University Research Library has a book stock of more than 200,000 books, an educational media library, and an electronic database. Since 2008, the Center for manipulative skills allows students to operate on models and phantoms to master skills of performing various medical procedures. Nonresident students of Kirov SMU live in three comfortable dormitories. Currently, a new 15-story dormitory building with 324 rooms is being built. Nowadays, Kirov SMU is famous in the Kirov region and far beyond as a young but promising University, consistently achieving its goals in the sphere of education and healthcare.
Kirov SMU specialists' high level of qualification was acknowledged multiple times. In October 2008, the Academy was the first among Kirov universities to get the Russian national contest "Russia's 100 best products" nominated in "Educational services." In 2012, the Academy won this contest. Besides, Kirov SMU became the first among Russian medical universities to be put into the Russian chamber of commerce and industry registry and got a certificate, acknowledging the high level of graduates' qualification. In November 2009, the Academy was given a certificate of employer trust by the Kirov chamber of commerce and industry, proving that Kirov SMU is registered in a list of employers, which strictly adhere to employees' labor rights.
