The institution of higher learning received the status of University in the year 2000 based on the Kazan branch of Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Kazan branch was established in 1968, and this year the University celebrates its 45th anniversary. For nine years, the University was headed by a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an honored worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan, doctor of technical Sciences, Professor Yuri G. Nazmeev. From 2003, the University's rector was the doctor of physics-mathematics sciences, professor, laureate of the Order M. Lomonosov, an honored worker of Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, Yuri Y. Petrushenko. At the end of 2011, Kazan State Power Engineering University was headed by a philosophy doctor (Ph.D.) of technical Sciences, Associate Professor Edward Y. Abdullazyanov.
Kazan State Power Engineering University is one of three state specialized power engineering institutions of higher learning in the Russian Federation (the other two being Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University) and Ivanovo State Power Engineering University). It occupies one of the top places in the region in education, availability of technical equipment, and conditions of scientific research and study process. The university trains specialists in 14 directions of preparing for bachelors and masters, and in 11 directions of training specialists (31 specialties) on a full time, evening, and correspondence forms of study.
The university trains specialists for the Volga region's power grids and the nearby and far foreign countries. Students undergo practical training at the power companies of Kazan city, Republic of Tatarstan, and Volga Region. Today the University has about nine thousand students and post-graduates from various regions of the Russian Federation, CIS countries, Asia and Africa. The University carries out retraining and qualification upgrading of the specialists in various fields of production, science, and technology. The educational process is conducted by highly qualified personnel. More than 21.2% (576 people) of the lecturers are doctors of sciences, professors 70.2% have academic degrees and titles (doctors of science – 73 people, philosophy doctors (Ph.D.) of science – 328 people). On the professor– lecturer composition qualification, the Kazan State Power Engineering University occupies one of Russia's leading places among all technical universities.
Based on the Kazan State Power Engineering University operates the scientific research Institute of power engineering problems, which is called upon to resolve tasks in the areas of heat and electric power industry, electrical engineering and electronics, environment conservation, and rational utilization of the resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Volga Region, and Western Urals. On the amount and the quality, scientific works performed by KSPEU are among the best from higher learning institutions in the Russian Federation.
The University is equipped with current corporate information and computing network, uniting all the subdivisions of the KSPEU, successfully used in the educational process and scientific research, Internet classes. The University has a publishing-polygraphic complex, equipped with modern equipment for producing books, methodical literature, scientific journals, etc. The KSPEU library has many reading halls and has a vast stock of literature in power engineering. The library's whole stock is reflected in the electronic catalogs of the University's standard computer network with free access for users.
