The University of Stuttgart's mission statement describes the way the University conceives of itself and on which it bases its actions. The mission statement informs all goals the university sets and the actions it undertakes.

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany with global significance. It sees itself as a center of university-based, non-university, and industrial research. Furthermore, it takes a role as a guarantor of research-based teaching, focused on quality and holism. The Stuttgart Way means an interdisciplinary integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.

Since November 2007, the excellence initiative of federal and state bodies promotes the Excellence Cluster' Simulation Technology (SimTech)' and the graduate school' Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (GSaME)' at the University of Stuttgart. With the new Excellence Strategy that supports top-level research, the University will apply for new clusters.

Since its founding in 1829, the University of Stuttgart has developed into a major research university located in the heart of one of Europe's economically most robust and most innovative regions.

Nearly 28,000 students pursue their studies on two campuses in 10 colleges and 150-degree programs. About 9,000 or one-third of enrolled students are women, and more than 18,000 are men. Nearly 6,000 or roughly 20 percent of our students come from abroad.

The University's budget underpins an ideal environment for research and teaching. Total revenues for 2015 amounted to 491 million euros, of which 39 percent represent external funding (excluding borrowings). This equates to 744,000 euros per professor. As of 2015, the University of Stuttgart had 5,190 employees. Two-thirds (3,438) were academic staff, including 262 professors. The remainder looked after technology (938), administration, and the library (819). The University of Stuttgart provides a balanced work-study-family environment for its employees, and for that, it has been certified as an Audit Family-friendly University.

The International Office helps Ph.D. students from abroad with all questions about formalities and everyday life in Germany. Studying for a doctorate leads to a doctoral dissertation and is the first research activity after graduating. It is also a step in a scientific career. Organizationally, Ph.D. students at the University of Stuttgart are classified as students. As such, they apply for doctoral degree study and enroll at the University.

The University of Stuttgart helps scientists from other countries establish themselves in Germany and concentrate on their research without bureaucratic obstacles.

The Welcome Center in the International Office functions as the first point of contact. It includes personal contact and a virtual platform with all relevant information, plus seminars and field trips. The support begins with planning the stay and immigration formalities. It extends to the stay in Stuttgart until the day of departure, after which it evolves directly into an intensive alumni contact.

Over the past 15 years, almost 200 Humboldt scholars chose a research stay at the University of Stuttgart. What drew them here was infrastructure at a top international level, the exceptional networking opportunities with institutions outside the University, and an intensive, inspiring climate for discussion.
