The Karlsruhe University of Education was established in its present form in 1962. Attended by 3.700 students and 180 researchers, the University provides a high standard in research and teaching in education, focusing on subject and age-group specific teaching and learning methodology and educational processes in social-cultural, and institutional contexts.

The University offers a teacher training program for primary and lower-secondary schools, including the "Europalehramt" (bilingual teaching) program, which qualifies teachers to teach other specialists in French or English. In addition to the teacher training programs, the University offers B.A. and M.A. programs in the field of education and the possibility to carry out doctoral and post-doctoral research.

The institution's profile as a whole emphasizes European cultural studies, intercultural education, plurilingualism, and media education. The University works closely with partner universities in many other countries and offers exchange opportunities for both students and lecturers.

Research at the University of Education includes both basic and applied approaches, with particular fields of interest in empirical education and school research and research in teaching methodology for individual school subjects.

The Gender Equality Representative is a permanent member of different committees at the University of Education and is responsible for upholding women and men's equal status. She is also affiliated with the Conference of Equal Opportunities Officers in Baden-Württemberg.

Furthermore, she functions as a contact person for questions regarding equality. If needed, she offers advice to students and colleagues on topics such as studying with children, for example, giving guidance to student-parents on how they can best organize their studies.

In the past few years, Karlsruhe University of Education has been working on becoming a family-friendly institution. After being certified as a 'family-friendly university' by the 'berufundfamilie GmbH' in 2006, Karlsruhe University of Education has been an official partner of the Karlsruhe alliance for families since 2009.

The city of Karlsruhe's free online babysitter directory provides possibilities to upload offers and requests. In this way, babysitters and families who need them can find each other quickly and easily.

Parents and child learning area at the Badische Landesbibliothek Wissenstor (state library) in Karlsruhe: The state library in Karlsruhe enables students and parents with academic work to study in a family-friendly atmosphere. Parents' café: Karlsruhe student union regularly organizes a parent-child meeting in cooperation with AStA KIT. The Karlsruhe University of Education offers a wide range of academic programs leading to professions in education. This includes initial degree programs leading to a first university degree and master, add-on, postgraduate and doctoral programs.

The teaching profession is sophisticated and versatile. We provide research-based training. The future teacher develops high personal and social skills as well as motivation. The Karlsruhe University of Education offers the following degree programs.

Teacher training Bachelor's and Master's degrees can be studied consecutively at the Karlsruhe University of Education. Due to the Bachelor's programs' polyvalent character, students obtain a first professional qualification (Bachelor's degree), leading to either a teacher-training master's program or any other professional master's program.

Having completed the Bachelor's program, students can reflect on their choice of study and opt for a non-teaching career if they prefer.
