There are 167 "Fachhochschulen" (FHS) in Germany. The official English translation of "Fachhochschule" is "university of applied sciences." This name mirrors exactly what these universities are all about: they stand for great practical relevance and focus with strong ties to applications in the working world. Those who study at a Fachhochschule are better prepared for positions in specific industries and fields than traditional university students.
Above all, FHs offer degree programs in technology, business and management, social studies, media, and design. Those interested in pursuing a degree in medicine, education (school teachers), or law cannot study these subjects at a Fachhochschule.
The firm's applied or practical focus of the universities of applied sciences is also reflected in their lecturers and professors' profile. Many of them have already gained career experience in the industry, business, or social work. This know-how qualifies and enables them to provide students with insights into the processes, working methods, and expectations of companies and institutions.
Compulsory internships (as a rule, students must complete one or two practical semesters) round out each student's practical application.
Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences goes back to the "Großherzogliche Badische Baugewerkeschule" (The Grand Duchy of Baden College of Building) founded in 1878. In 1919 it was renamed "Badische Höhere Technische Lehranstalt (Staatstechnikum)" (Baden Higher Technical School – State College of Technology). The "Staatstechnikum" then became a formative concept beyond Baden.
After World War II, the stormy period of technical development saw the foundation of numerous state and private technical schools. This led to misunderstandings and mix-ups of their concepts, mainly when students were evaluated abroad. So the college was again renamed in 1963 to "Staatliche Ingenieurschule Karlsruhe" (State Engineering School).
The problem of recognition and equivalence in engineering education in the European Community in the early 70s was a main driving force for establishing universities of applied sciences. On 1 October 1971, the "Staatliche Ingenieurschule Karlsruhe" became the "Fachhochschule Karlsruhe" (Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences), with approx. 1,500 students.
To emphasize that it belongs to the tertiary education sector (higher education), the university changed its name from January 1995 to "Fachhochschule Karlsruhe - Hochschule für Technik" since July 2005 it is called "Hochschule Karlsruhe – Technik und Wirtschaft" (in English, the name has remained Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences).
Today over 8,000 students are enrolled at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. Approx. One hundred ninety-one full-time professors, 17 honorary professors, 390 contract teachers, and instructors and 452 employees teach and support them.
The abstracted fan and pyramid forms of the university's signet refer to Karlsruhe and show the close ties between the university and the Karlsruhe region. The line style used symbolizes the openness, dynamism, and innovation power of the university. The red-colored areas' corners stand for the university's primary tasks: teaching continued education and applied research, and development and technology transfer.
The university further offers the additional study course "Foreign Languages and International Project Management," which is available to all faculties. In addition to learning English, French, and Spanish during the first two years of their studies, they also acquire intercultural competence. Lectures on international project management prepare students for an international career.
Guest lecturers of partner universities abroad hold technical lectures in foreign languages.
Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences cultivates partnerships with more than 150 universities worldwide to foster international cooperation.
These various contacts allow an increasing number of HsKA students to study abroad for one semester or write their final thesis abroad. This is possible within the framework of bilateral student exchange agreements. Many students also choose to complete their practical semester abroad.
In recognition of the exemplary implementation of the "European Credit. Transfer and Accumulation System" for student mobility within Europe, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences was the first university to be awarded the European Commission's ECTS label in 2009. The label was then renewed in 2013. The many integrated international study programs are a feature of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences that allows its students to acquire a German bachelor or master's degree and a degree from one, or even two, universities abroad.
