The University of San Agustin is a private Catholic university in Iloilo City, Philippines. With 40 initial students, it was established in 1904 as a preparatory school for boys by the Spanish Catholic missionaries under the oldest religious Roman Catholic order in the Philippines during the American colonial period, the Order of Saint Augustine (San Agustin).In 1917, it was incorporated and became Colegio de San Agustin de Iloilo. In March 1953, San Agustin attained university status, making it the first university in Western Visayas. San Agustin is the first and only Augustinian university in the Asia-Pacific region.
The University of San Agustin now provides programs from Basic Education up to post-graduate studies in Law, Business, Education, Computer Studies, Arts and Sciences, Performing Arts, Music, Engineering, Medical Technology, Nursing, and Pharmacy. In 2013, the university celebrated its 60th year as an institution of higher learning.
The Co-Curricular Activities are practical and recreational school experiences as distinct from the classroom's academic proceedings designed to entertain, extend, reinforce, or complement academic experiences. They supplement the curriculum by providing opportunities for the development of the students' optimum growth and special abilities through the exploration and discovery of their interests and aptitudes by offering them a wide variety of worthwhile courses and guiding them in the choice of and in training them in different fields of productive endeavor. Culture and Arts open not only opportunities for the aesthetic experience but also an avenue for seeking the meaning and direction of human existence and search for the "True, Good and Beautiful." To this end, the school holds various culture and arts activities such as performances, lectures, workshops, exhibits, and literary- musical-dance competitions, among others.
The College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education (CLASE) is composed of what used to be the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, and the Conservatory of Music. It is also the service college in charge of the General Education (GE) curriculum. With the recent vertical articulation of academic programs, the College also offers graduate programs, namely, Ph.D./M.A. Education, M.A. Guidance and Counseling, and M.A. Religious Studies to be under the Graduate School.
The reorganized College offers undergraduate degree programs in four disciplinal clusters: Humanities, Social Science, Science, and Education. These include A.B. Communication, A.B. Literature, A.B. Philosophy, Bachelor of Music, A.B. Political Science, B.S. Foreign Service, B.S. Psychology B.S. Biology, B.S. Chemistry, Bachelor of Library and Information Science, B.S. Computer Science, B.S. Information Technology Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education. In addition to GE courses aligned with the programs above, the College also offers GE courses in the areas of Languages, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Social Science.
The College of Education holds the distinction of being a CHED Center of Development for Teacher Education. The Arts and Sciences and Education programs (totaling nine) are accredited Level II by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). The Ph.D. Education and M.A. Education programs are PAASCU-accredited Level I. The Information Technology and Computer Science programs are also PAASCU-accredited Levels I.
The College of Health and Allied Medical Professions (CHAMP) is the merger of the former College of Nursing (CON) and College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology (CPMT) of the University of San Agustin. CHAMP is home to several board topnotchers, internationally and nationally acclaimed professors and instructors, scientists, and outstanding alumni. The College offers the university's flagship courses – Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science.
The vision of the University of San Agustin College of Law is to continuously strive to provide quality legal education through integral formation, instruction, research, community extension, and extra-curricular activities to produce ethical, moral, and competent Augustinian legal professionals who will be leaders in their fields of endeavors. As part of a Catholic Augustinian Educational Institution, the College of Law's mission is to provide each student with quality legal education and instill in them Christian Augustinian Values to guide them in their pursuit of assisting the state in the administration of justice.
The Learning Resource Center is committed to supporting Augustinian education by providing instructional materials and facilities for teaching-learning processes, research initiatives, and recent innovations to meet client satisfaction in promoting life-long learning. The Learning Resource Center or Library usually reflects the standard and quality of education of the school. It is a multimedia center that supports the total educational program of the academe. It has a wide variety of resources in various formats from conventional printed materials, such as books and periodicals, to other forms (non-print) such as videotapes, slides, transparencies, CD-ROM databases other online e-resources.
But today's technology has brought evolution to the stereotype libraries. The digital age is forcing the libraries to change. The Library, now renamed LRC, has installed Follett Destiny Library Manager, an easy-to-use, web-based library automation, and management solution. It makes the Library not only more efficient but more effective at supporting student learning collaboration. As a tech-savvy LRC of the 21st century, it gives students and faculty access to library resources anytime, anywhere, 24/7 through our university website or the Destiny Quest mobile application.
On the Rada's ground floor, Hall Annex is the Stack Room, where collections of over 140,000 volumes of books are housed, while the Graduate School Library is located on the second floor. Adjacent to Rada Hall Annex is the Fray Luis de Leon Building which lodges, the Technical Section, Senior High School Library, the Current Loose and Bound Periodicals and Serials, the e-journals and other Electronic Databases at the ground floor, and the College of Law Library at the second floor. A Discussion Area is provided at the center between the Mentrida and Fray Luis De Leon Buildings. The Basic Education Department maintains their libraries in their respective buildings. The Learning Resource Center is committed to providing life-long learning and good quality customer-oriented services.
