The purpose of Student Academic Success is to help students in the Rio Grande Valley make a successful transition from high school and two-year institutions to UTRGV and to make substantial progress through the end of their bachelor's degrees and beyond. We are committed to providing the tools that students need to flourish.
Student Services is dedicated to providing support to students in resolving a diverse number of obstacles faced along the way to the achievement of their academic career.
The Counseling Center provides free and confidential counseling services for UTRGV students to address mental health concerns and seeks to promote personal growth and well-being among our campus community through education and outreach activities.
The UTRGV Career Center assists undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni who seek help in formulating and implementing career plans. Various programs and workshops are offered each semester to assist students in selecting a major or trying to relate educational experiences to employment opportunities. Our office provides students with essential services to help them in their career endeavors. Whether finding a major, critiquing résumés, or preparing for an interview, we are here every step of the way.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine. It made it possible for the region's residents to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
