Southeastern Oklahoma State University provides an environment of academic excellence that enables students to reach their highest potential. By having personal access to excellent teaching, challenging academic programs, and extracurricular experiences, students will develop skills and habits that promote values for career preparation, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning.

The primary emphasis at Southeastern continues to be a quality undergraduate education. The University offers an array of baccalaureate-level programs that prepare students for a changing society. Also, selected graduate-level programs are provided to serve the needs of the region.

In fulfilling its mission, Southeastern fosters the region's cultural opportunities, economic growth, environmental quality, scientific and technological progress, and social and personal well being.

    For students Southeastern will:

    1. Provide an opportunity to succeed through a challenging, learner-centered academic environment.
    2. Offer an undergraduate foundation in the liberal arts and sciences, emphasizing integrating critical thinking, communication skills, and appropriate technological applications into the curriculum across all disciplines.
    3. Provide a general education program that familiarizes students with significant areas of scholarship.
    4. Provide professional, academic, and career-oriented undergraduate and graduate programs to meet the workforce's changing needs.
    5. Provide an environment for non-academic experiences, which fosters personality, social living, and effective citizenship.
    6. Present a system of governance that provides reliable information and, as appropriate, involves the students in the decision-making process.
    7. Actively recruit traditionally underrepresented students and offer scholarship programs to attract students of various socio-economic and academic levels.

At Southeastern, we believe supporting a well-funded scholarship program is one way to demonstrate our commitment to students and their families. We've been helping students for many years, and we are committed to helping you find the resources needed to complete your degree.

The Learning Center was established to support the assessment and development of necessary English, reading, and mathematics skills. The Learning Center is part of a comprehensive University effort designed to support quality educational experiences for students. The Learning Center is responsible for assessing and placing new students who may be academically at risk.

The Learning Center offers support in students' necessary skills through a multi-faceted basic literacy program tailored to meet diverse student needs. Competency-based education, individual learning styles, self-paced learning, and different preparedness levels are essential considerations in the program.

A federal grant fully funds student Support Services (SSS) through the U.S. Department of Education and the TRiO program. Southeastern Oklahoma State University's SSS program is one of over 1200 programs across the country.

SSS helps eligible students complete their post-secondary education by providing a foundation for overcoming academic, personal, and cultural barriers to higher education. By fostering a highly personalized (one-on-one) environment, SSS staff strives to build professional and personal relationships with students to assess their individual needs carefully and offer appropriate academic, personal, and career support.

The University is linked by tradition to the geographic region of southeastern Oklahoma and north-central Texas. Although new programs have produced many changes in the geographic origin and the ethnic backgrounds of the student body, they are still primarily products of small towns and rural communities in Oklahoma and Texas. The present student body numbers approximately 4,000. Students are served at eight different locations, including a branch campus in McCurtain County.
