Salus University is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, charitable organization and an accredited, private, specialized academic institution approved by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSCHE). Additionally, Salus University optometry, audiology, physician assistant, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology degree programs have been accredited by those professions' governing bodies.
Salus University uses various financial aid programs to assist eligible students in meeting their demonstrated financial need. Financial assistance is generally available in scholarships, loans, campus employment, and budget plans. Because of governmental policy regarding the financing of health professional education, most available monies are loans.
Fundamental research is currently being conducted in a range of areas that span Audiology, Optometry, and Vision Impairment. Salus University researchers are published in such prestigious journals as Neuron, Nature, The Journal of Neuroscience, and The Journal of Biochemistry.
Support for research projects at the University comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute (NEI), which is part of NIH, and other foundations, such as the Pennsylvania Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation and the Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Research Foundation.
Salus University is committed to the personal as well as the professional growth of students. With this goal in mind, Salus University has established the Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD). Salus University's founding college, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), was established in 1919, and the history of PCO includes a long list of firsts in the history of modern optometry.
In 2018, The Eye Institute celebrated 40 years of service to the Oak Lane community while Salus University celebrated its tenth anniversary as a multidisciplinary institution.
