Historians don't collect facts. They analyze them to understand how different viewpoints (such as Democrat and Republican) arise, how the processes of change (like the collapse of the Soviet Union) work, and how to use the information to solve problems. In history classes at IU East, you learn about these differences and processes. You learn how to locate, evaluate, and use the information necessary to explain to them. And you practice the techniques of critical thinking and clear communication necessary to persuade others to consider your interpretation. These techniques — finding useful, reliable information, analyzing it, and then using it to solve problems — are career skills that are much in demand by employers. They are often the ticket to promotion on the job.
And what could be more fun than developing them through the study of the United States, European, and World history through the ages! You can take courses in all of these areas. You can also earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities with a Concentration in History, a Minor in History, or a Minor in International Studies. Contact your advisor or a member of the history faculty for further information.
