The University is enjoying record growth. We have converted from the quarter calendar to the semester calendar and welcomed the largest class in our history — more than 28,000 students. Most of them are the first in their families to pursue a university degree. We opened Cal State LA Downtown, offering degree and certificate programs in a vibrant city section. A comprehensive study published in the New York Times ranks Cal State LA number one in the nation for our students' upward mobility. Our University propels a higher percentage of students from the bottom fifth of income into the top fifth of income earners. The Equality of Opportunity Project conducted this prestigious study. The Division of Academic Affairs, one of the largest units within the University, is under the Provost and Vice President's leadership for Academic Affairs. The University provides instruction through its eight colleges. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Library provides the primary bibliographic and information resource for the curriculum of the University.
